Anyone know if RHEL 7 will ship with Python 3 in the base, even if not default? That could go a long way to boosting Python 3 adoption. I know it's in SCL, but that lacks convenience for a lot of users.

As a developer it's easier for me to ship java apps with the current runtime than it is to ship a python app with the updated runtime. Therefore I'm more likely to stay current with Java than I am with Python, especially when my t

I'm 39 and write code every day for my employer, but outside the scope of the engineering team. I guess it may fall under exploratory/architectural work for what might be future products, though if they gain any traction they wil

Its not always the developer. For instance, I do some utility class software that needs to just work on RedHat/CentOS 6. Having to build Python 3 from source, or use SCL and mess with paths, and virtualenvs is simply not an option for

Did you see that? Developer productivity in North America just increased for one day. Its back down now. Honestly, while HN was down, I didn't feel the need to hunt down other news. In fact, I got a good start on the Coursera crypto

I'd like to see CentOS, but with the desktop environment stuff kept more up to date.. Would give you solid underpinnings that lasts for years, then a modern UI on top (Gnome 3, KDE what have you, Chrome, Firefox).. I know its mostly d

Depends what you are doing but Python or Perl can make great systems programming languages. Of course if you are doing Linux kernel hacking, you'll need C. Go and D are probably also modern examples of what could be used for systems pr

My effort to becoming a polyglot programmer was to learn different languages for different jobs. For instance, my chosen languages are C, Python, Java, Javascript and more recently Go. I believe that each language is better suited for some

My cheaper VPS option doesn't allow you to spin up servers on demand or offer prorated billing. So while there may be cheaper, DO seems the cheapest for the flexibility it has.

C, custom drivers. For storage, PostgreSQL and some custom stuff, also playing with Cassandra. If a web interface is required, SpringMVC - it's not cool but works.

I used hstore in an existing database for metrics. It allowed me to add different metrics in the code, rather than having to update the database for new metrics, then a metrics to hstore layer that more or less "streamed" them in
