Actually, there's an awesome IRC client for OS X called Textual: http://www.codeux.com/textual/ You can customize its UI using css. I love it.

The main reason some iOS apps say this is because of how sensitive some iOS apps are to low memory conditions. It's true that iOS will automatically terminate non-foreground applications to free RAM, however this process is not instantaneou

I'm seeing very different pricing on the same Amazon URL... the Kindle version is the cheapest, $16.99.

There are two kinds of sysadmins: pipefitters and engineers. Or put another way, maintainers and architects. The pie for maintainers is indeed shrinking. The pie for architects, for people who invent novel ways of solving new problems, is g

That's completely okay because those older touchpads don't support gestures beyond two-finger-scroll anyway.

Before I read the paper, I was adamant about "more light is better." But read the paper: "We show that a linear increase in the resolution of images under each microlens results in a linear increase in the sharpness of the refocused photogr

It's extremely interesting, for two groups of reasons: (1) creative possibilities (playing with depth of field is my favorite part of photography); (2) market applications. Regarding (2), if I understand the paper properly, this should allo

Anyone know anything else about the company? Founders, investors, etc? The only thing I could dig up is that Manu Kumar has Lytro's Twitter account on his "portfolio" list [1] and that the domain was, interestingly, created in 2003. Formerl

It's not just one ISP. I've seen the behavior described by the parent from multiple ISPs in separate countries. It's been driving me nuts for so long that I started collecting information about the connections I've seen it from. Years ago,

Stuxnet has nothing to do with "nuclear reactors". It targeted uranium enrichment centrifuges.

I've read in several places that Rigol has been making Agilent's low-end equipment for quite a while now actually.

Indeed; I have a DS1052E myself and did the 100MHz software hack. Instructions are here: http://www.eevblog.com/forum/index.php?topic=553.0 Basically, Rigol spec'd out a 100MHz scope and then crippled it in software to have a cheaper 50MH

Part of the reason 30" displays cost as much as they do is that they're just physically larger, regardless of DPI. This requires a lot more yield-sensitive silicon on its own, and also requires a lot more in terms of display illumination. A

Not really. The iPad that Verizon "supports" and sells in their stores is merely a WiFi-only iPad bundled with a separate portable WiFi hotspot. This is completely different than an iPad with a built-in Verizon-compatible radio, which does

You're correct, except that it is "unlocking" that allows you to use an AT&T iPhone on another carrier. "Jailbreaking" is completely different - it simply allows you to install unsigned software. One must jailbreak their iPhone before i

Yes, that looks pretty good. I bought mine over a year ago and it has no memory - if you want to log, it has to be connected to a computer, so I sleep tethered when I use it. This one looks like quite an improvement.

There is an inexpensive way to do this, actually. It's not as good as a real sleep study of course, but it works. Go to eBay and search for "usb pulse oximeter". They're about $100. Wear it overnight (tape helps) while the software graphs y

This article finally adds detail about how the Google hacks were carried out - something I've been waiting for since the first day of cablegate, when it was mentioned that there were cables discussing the event.

Looks like Google has indexed the new release, and a quick site: search shows a few references to Google, but none of them seem to be the one referenced in this story. http://www.google.com/search?q=google%20site%3Acablegate.wik...
