I love EasyDNS for domain hosting. I can't quite bring myself to use the same company for DNS hosting and registration; I've used Dotster as a registrar since the 90's. You couldn't pay me to use huge, inept outfits like GoDaddy or Dreamhos

It's not really obvious, but you're free to skip the registration and Apple ID portions of the Mac OS X installation process. I hit command-Q, which brings up a dialog with a Skip button.

Nothing makes CC processors happier than many tiny transactions. Apple and Amazon defer and batch transactions in order to save a fortune on transaction fees, which traditionally involve a fixed cost on the order of tens of cents, plus a mu

The statement you're quibbling with — "free-of-charge online services ad-free" — is unassailable. Anyone signing up for iCloud with the intention of using it for data sync (contacts, calendars, browser bookmarks), and/or application data, a

The truth doesn't have to lie somewhere in between. Look at the last paragraph: Even for ISPs running their own network, such as BT, [ISP CTO] Davies claims the figures of €0.01-0.03 per GB are "rubbish". "It's an order of magnitude greate

Not to mention that the whole patent system is stacked to produce settlements, because winning (to say nothing of losing) is so much more expensive. A tiny fraction of cases actually go to trial.

Marco's position, which I support, is a little like Warren Buffett pointing out that his taxes are too low, which I also support. People who reply "Well if you think your taxes are so low, make a voluntary contribution" are probably-deliber

I love twitter, but if that's all I was getting from it, I wouldn't use it if they paid me. Why do you bother following sources who show you a lot of stuff you don't like?

Someone has to be CEO and for the long term is Tim Cook really the best person for the job ? Yes. It has nothing to do with his ability to critique a product design. Jobs was sui generis.

Steve Jobs wore a lot of hats (ruthless tastemaker and keynote impresario among them) not because the CEO must hold these roles but because he happened to be best at them. Arguing that they must be held by the guy with the organizational po

Likewise, networks that start selling DVDs for season X only after season X+1 is underway. Seems to be almost the norm. Why not preserve the opportunity to convert customers to the most lucrative channel? At least with DVDs there's signific

The OP clearly decided that not doing business with Amazon was the right choice for their business, and Amazon richly deserves the scorching. Amazon looked like it was setting up an app store where Android developers had a hope of getting p

I found the fact that the latter exists informative, but in no way threatening. Why does it have to be "threatening" to be newsworthy?

But it's not true of any other app store with which Amazon competes. Whether or not it's true of Walmart isn't really relevant.

He's not saying the 0% price was a secret from his company, he's saying it was a secret to the general public. I pay pretty close attention, and I thought the free apps of the day were paid at the 20% rate that Amazon warns they may pay you

I walked in last year wondering if I could get RJ45 ethernet caps at a decent price. As I recall, they were 8.99 for five (NB: used in pairs). After shipping, I wound up buying 100 from Monoprice, for about a dollar more.

I wish I saw any basis for 1, 2, or 4. Unless by "eliminate squatting" you mean "eliminate TLD squatting", which would make 2 as irrelevant as 3. In particular, "real-looking domains" have never been a required detail of phishing attacks, w

American Express' passwords are now case-insensitive too. Incredibly, this still qualifies as a slight improvement over their previous password regime, which used a maximum of eight characters, few "special" characters accepted.

That's not a constitutional argument for Amazon's position. You're obligated to pay sales tax on items purchased out of state, by annual remittance. Almost nobody does it, but if you're ever audited (by your state), they can ding you if you

Apple's been pushing developers toward LLVM for several years, and is bound to make it an app store requirement at some point. I've observed no such 10-20% slowdown on iOS, which is more CPU-constrained than most realms. Typically, LLVM-gen
