LORD was so much fun. I also ran a BBS, first on Wildcat (RIP graphics were amazing), then on RoboFX. Bought all of the above by saving up $2/week allowance. RoboFX was insane. It was this little-known host that offered a full windowin

FUSE is used to present a file system interface of something that isn’t a file system. E.g. present an LDAP directory as a file system. Writing FUSE drivers is pretty frustrating, though, and not well supported by all OSs. My takeaway is th

I love this idea so much. It’s a shame that it would all get lost when passing through a recruiter or when needing to re-enter all the info on applications.

This really reminds me of FidoNet mail [1] back in the good old days of BBS. What’s old is new again; now with 100% more json! [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FidoNet?wprov=sfti1

You’re right, and that’s part of the reason I remarked my comment’s shallowness. It was more of a personal lament rather than a strong criticism of what looks like a really interesting language.

This quite a shallow observation, but I really wish new languages would cut down on verbosity and boilerplate. Making people type out “function” instead of “fn”, “def”, or nothing at all feels like unneeded friction. I’m not looking for APL

I travelled to Singapore on business once, and the immigration form had a warning about the death penalty for drug-related offences printed in red, all caps lettering. It was definitely jarring.

I don’t think that’s much clearer at all. I realize that you’re citing a specific example, but if your approach is to understand the problem first, then you may as well use the closed-form solution of your problem: sum(1,n) = n*(n+1)/2

I found a Bohm through the excellent book What is Real by Adam Becker. It was one of the first books that advocated the philosophy of science that I’d encountered, and it was fascinating. Warning: If you’re a huge fan of Bohr and the Copen

I also find curly braces/parens/etc annoying to type, but recently had my mind blown when I saw a typing tutor program that recommended using left-shift to create those characters. For 35+ years I’ve been using right-shift for thi

I really like this, the simplicity is really refreshing. Nothing to do with the article, but it would be nice if Slack (or IOS/Android) offered better customization of notifications. Errors and warnings are indistinguishable from regul

Thank you very much for your work! I learned about mermaid about a year ago, and have used it pretty extensively since, including as a visualization and control interface for a DAG execution framework. Mermaid’s flow chart layout engine is

If you’ve used IMDb, you may enjoy tmdb.org . It is much, much faster, and has good coverage. I rarely need to fall back to IMDb unless it’s something quite obscure.

“Flip around the decimal”… you haven’t accounted for irrational numbers. The reals are not countably infinite. Even if they were, pi is not between zero and one, so would not appear in your list. The rest of your argument is difficult to pa

What kind of latency are you talking about? Async latency for completing a task isn’t deterministic, and there’s no guarantee data will be processed as soon as it becomes available. Async runtimes rely heavily on hints from their tasks as t

Many new cars have electric heaters for the air venting into the cabin. In that case their statement about confusing warm air with a warm engine would be true.

This how I operated for a long time as well, but made liberal use of text replacement for frequent things like il -> I’ll. Unfortunately, when I got a Mac laptop, those replacements were synched and for some reason can’t be disabled on j

In the good old *nix days the system provided pretty much everything you needed: C, perl, man pages, and well documented header files. Throw in a couple of good books on programming, and you could do a lot. That's still the case, but i

+1 for Feedly, although I use Feedly Classic on IOS for a more concise, no-frills UI. I really appreciate the header + summary without thumbnails format for quickly going through large-volume sources (like HN).
