I don't think overpopulation is the core problem in the developed world. Some developed countries have had to take on immigrants lest their populations decrease. We have great systems to generate wealth, but they come at the price of a mass

You're right. But that doesn't make sense to me. I do the same thing. The point is that I would end up clicking on the search result anyways had the paid link not been there. What am I missing here?

Are you saying it is worth it for the NY Times to advertise on the search term "NY Times"? I see examples like this all the time but it makes no sense to me. In fact, the only ad-links I click on are these. You just gave me my first data po

Here here. I thought the reverse commute out of Manhattan wasn't too bad. Subsequently, I experienced first hand how utterly soul sucking it is. On top of that, it isn't cheap! When you commute out of grand central in the morning, you pay a

I don't understand your argument for "you shouldn't stop trusting your instincts ...". You say that you would have been right dozens or hundreds of times. But we all know that startups are a numbers game. It doesn't matter if you say no to

I second that. Don't buy the snake oil. People get killed running half-marathons that didn't train properly for. I know people who seem to be able to run full marathons without any training. It varies from person to person. If I was stupid

Like many here, I've been feeling really down because of Steve's passing. At first, it was confusing ... I never even met the guy. Why am I grieving so much? Seeing all the posts on HN and FB, it is comforting to know it's not just me who n

Fantastic! I hope this happens more and more. Government IT is in the dark ages and it causes significant grief to the population. Can someone please fix the Cali DMV website next?

What a horrible title for an article! The first time someone used ... X is dead, long live X ... it had meaning. It is completely cliche now.

I have a very naive question but would appreciate an answer. Does using Amazon's CloudFront provide the same functionality if you live inside their cloud?

Good response. I recall reading (think this was in Too Big To Fail) that the deciding powers were afraid that if there was another Lehman, cash would stop coming out of the ATM machines. This is what prompted AIG and a few of the other shot

I thought there was some intelligent circuitry in place to prevent some threat scenarios. Specifically, I'm thinking of "butt sniffing". At Google IO, I thought we were told that you can't use the NFC function when the screen is locked. A

For a case in point, consider CloudFlare. They made it to the final round in SF last year. Who is to say it is similar to PageRank, but when I heard what they did I instantly thought ... wow ... a company that does deep tech and has already

Also don't forget debt. Most MDs and DDSs I know in the US have 350K+ of debt. On top of that, they have to worry about malpractice suits. The work is very demanding physically and emotionally. While I can work from home on a rainy day, a d
