I lived in the bay area for a while and moved away. I went to the meetups and didn't get it initially. I used to joke that every person, including their dog, has a lil startup. After a while, I started to "get" the extreme optimism, ideals,

I was fortunate to have dinner with him once when he visited our University (sadly, this was close to the time of his death). He was a pretty sweet old man. I recall he was very humble and a vegetarian. I had no clue he was so accomplished

I think this is an important issue. I didn't think about fumes when I got the printer. Someone who sat next to me started getting headaches. Also, another colleague was concerned about the effect of burning ABS on reproductive health (she p

One thing that should be noted is the burning smell of ABS plastic. I got a 3D printer in my office that is currently serving as a paperweight on my desk. That is until I get access to a lab with an exhaust hood. All my previous experiences

Would you be willing to do a short post-mortem write up on the load challenges your site faced? Since you are part of the HN crowd, I imagine you did all the reasonable things and somethings still surprised you :)

I was one of the participants and I had a great time. I'm probably a bit of a hackathon junkie. I judge my involvement in such events based on a few metrics. Did I learn something new? Did I have a good time? Was I able to get something wor

May I suggest you take a look at Make: Electronics, Making things talk, and Making things see. The Make folks also have a set of smaller books: Getting Started With Arduino, Getting Started with Processing, etc. These books are written in a

Bump ... I've had personal experience where I needed a few 100 VMs for a short experiment. A quick message to Amazon got the job done. Took less than a day to get approval.

I was in the audience at the NY AWS summit ... quite a loud applause when they give their per hour cost number. I was also impressed. However, I found it a bit surprising that that it took 2 hours to acquire the VMs, and 1 hour to do the ac

Isn't that the OpenStack philosophy? "Lets be flexible" I like AWS. You're right ... it isn't perfect. But it is good enough. And that's exactly what you want for a standard IMHO. Just my personal opinions.

I'm a computer guy who loves his work a lot! That said, I do have to eat and I do need to retire some day. That is certainly not the purpose of my life but it is kinda necessary. I've also done the numbers on how much I need to retire and i

This is such an obvious thing, it shocks me that policy makers don't get it. In Canada, there has been a push to increase the supply of CS PhDs for years. The result? Getting a University job in many regions became ridiculously hard. The ne

Good point. Does one really need to know how to code up a neural network in order to just use it? This has been my biggest frustration with some teachers of Machine Learning. They need to abstract away the innards and provide a usable high-
