Scary and sad. The only good that can possibly come from this is that the industry giants start pushing in earnest for patent reform. If all the big software companies seriously want a change, I think it can happen.

I was just in Stamford last weekend helping my gf find a place there. We both currently live in NYC right now. First off, rents in Stamford are insane. Decent 1-bedrooms currently rent for over 2 grand (which is what I pay in Manhattan). Gr

When I used dig to get the AAAA record, I only saw 1 address for google. What gives? Surely there are more than 1 addresses ... I thought dig would show them all. It does that for AA records. I'm very confused.

Seemed to be down in NYC. Actually, I think it might have been a browser issue. Chrome worked. Firefox did not. I think chrome was falling back to IPv4. Tried a few wgets ... some versions correctly falled back to ipv4 (cygwin). A friend's

Happy IPV6 Day! * I tend to lose karma anytime I make a joke on HN. I don't understand why as I believe it doesn't contradict HN guidelines. Maybe I'm just not that funny? :-p

Excellent article. The Mickey Mouse Protection Act always made me uneasy. What's to say they don't extend protection yet again? Perpetual copyrights are no less than tyranny in a media society. This article talks about an instance where wor

Yes ... I was surprised by this. They fired a salvo at a lot of companies! The music part of iCloud seems very similar to Google Music. I tried their Beta but was very unimpressed. Perhaps Apple will get it right. I'm not holding my breath

As others have noted, this article does some fear mongering. But it does raise some issues: 1) WPF might potentially go away. I'm glad I didn't waste any time learning this so I can care less. People who bought into "WPF is the future" migh

You can get hired at all these places without a PhD. Your job title may not be "Researcher" though. At MSR, there is a category called "RSDE-Research Software Design Engineer", and at IBM Research, there is a related position. Your focus in

I find it funny that SV Angel had to come out with a clarification on the matter. I recall feeling pretty bummed after hearing this presentation. It was a weird tone given the general can-do attitude of the TC Disrupt audience. Here's the w

You're right. The customer is the one doing the float. This margin seems high to me. And they still end up with a loss ... boggles the mind.

I'm surprised by the loss they are running. Think how big their cut is. My understanding is that on a 50% off deal, they get half of the merchant's take! Granted their effective cut is lower since they provide some costly/valuable services

I'm just fed up with the stupidity of the status quo. As a number of posts have pointed out, the lawyers, Patent Office, etc. generally don't see this as a problem. People like us who actually want to create new things ... we're the ones wh
