I have a gopher hole. So do a few hundred other people on this planet. The Gopher-sphere's a slow, thoughtful place.

I wasn't talking about cartels. A corporation is a union of owners. We've just been trained not to see it that way.

Which is fine. I'm happy when they have that choice, because that's balanced. Owners have the choice to go it alone or combine too.

Corporate shareholders are permitted to form a union of owners. It works for them. Workers should have the same rights. That's just balance. As far as the bad strategy comment goes, I've been working in both public and private uni

Another Debian stable user. I've been using LXDE for years. Nothing changes. I like it that way. LXQT or XFCE would be my next choices.

This is so true. You never understand a subject as thoroughly as you do after you've taught it. The act of distilling what you know and determining how to explain it clearly to others is as good for you as it is for them. Also, you hav

Canada's Senate has a mandatory retirement age of 75. So that's a perfectly workable solution.

This is my experience too. I've been using Classic Shell and then Open-Shell on Win10 at work for years. I was using Classic Shell on Windows 7 before that. It seems to just work for me. I've had no problems. I have a little nuc-s

One solution is to use Open-Shell instead of Microsoft's start menu: https://open-shell.github.io/Open-Shell-Menu/ Stardock usually makes a replacement start menu too.

About 1980, I bought a Mad Digest called "Madvertising, or Up Madison Ave." Here's a link: https://archive.org/details/madvertisingorup0000deba I know that it helped shape the cynic that I am. Those guys

I like the reddit rule for downvotes: you should only downvote if a post doesn't contribute to the discussion. I frequently upvote posts that I agree with. Mea culpa. But I rarely downvote a post. I could probably count the downvotes i

I've been using these for close to a decade now. We have two. They're so good, but very hard to find now. When the time comes, I'll scavenge parts from both to keep one going.

I saw a lot of articles like this in the past. My friend had colon cancer and survived, but it was tenuous. So when I turned 48, I asked my doctor about a colonoscopy. He said, it's 50 now. When I turned 50, I asked my doctor again. He

I'm not sure. I do remember a friend with a Tandy 1000 and CompuServe having email back then. I don't recall BBS systems requiring email for registration. Most of the ones I went to a few years later (early 90s) didn't requir

Feature suggestion: it would be good to have the option to have a note "stick" to a point in the document. I know that that's not always what people would want, but I could really see it being useful in certain circumstances.

This is a faulty parallel. Someone who smokes until they're 98 is not engaged in a quest to change the general outcome of smoking for all others.

What irked me was that a lot of major corporations got together to subvert the law out of self-interest. If the people wanted to change the law, fine. Call a referendum.

IKEA used to ship solid wood products -- and laminated pine-strip items too -- in flat boxes. Back in the 90s, I bought a solid wood bookshelf and a laminated pine strip coffee table from them. They were structurally sound and very durable.

My 100-year-old house in British Columbia was built entirely of Douglas Fir. At this point, you can barely pound a nail into the studs and joists. The density is incredible. New lumber feels insubstantial in comparison.
