I bought Softmaker Office last year. The Textmaker word processor is better than LibreOffice Writer. It's more MS Office compatible, so I don't get complaints about formatting issues from co-workers.

Given that Office ran on my 486 and Word and Excel did everything back then that I still need them to do today, a slow startup time on modern hardware is ridiculous. Office should be modular with a lean core and extensions for those who nee

My wife and I moved our stuff across Canada -- from Alberta to Nova Scotia -- by mail. That's when I found out about the "monotainer," a giant palletized wire box that they fill with items heading to a common destination. Our

I don't know quite when it started to happen, but changing and/or eliminating the default Office keyboard shortcuts in the last few iterations has really irked me.

Where has this been all my life? This is a special kind of sad, poetic Zen.

Is there something that makes this two month old article particularly relevant today? It looks like China is now matching the US tariffs.

Of course I noticed the statement that students have always been transactional. I agree with it. I don't think my students are unusual. Perhaps the situation in Canada is better than wherever you live.

Yes, students are generally transactional. So give them a quiz on the reading and then start your discussion. It's been working for me for 25 years. My students were great at the beginning of my career and they're still great now.

I use Start11 on my work computer. It allows me to resurrect a lot of the features that I liked on earlier versions of Windows. Their software is also extremely stable.

The auto-save in Google Docs is undoubtedly better, but it was possible to set an auto-save interval in minutes on Word 6.0 for Windows 3.1. Back then, Word's auto-save updated the file that you were working on rather than creating a s

I don't mind re-purchasing software if it ages out gracefully. I recently bought a (non-subscription) copy of Softmaker Office. If I have to buy a newer version ten years from now, that's okay. It's got better file compatibil

Peak UI design in cars hit around the 1980s. All that's needed are a small number of physical controls: headlights, turn signals, wipers, heat/AC, etc. Anything more than that should work with voice command -- or it doesn't b

I'm a historian, so the work is different, but the overall theme of the responses here resonates with me: read. That's how you find the issues and pieces of evidence that have been neglected, the controversies in your field, and l

My experience is that contemporary varieties of tomatoes grown at home are much better than those grown by the big producers. I'm not sure why, but our tomatoes are always red all the way through. The ones from the store are often whit

Definitely a fair comment. I didn't mean to imply that I'd attempted to grow all of the heirlooms out there!

I'd like to try one, but I'd limit my expectations. My wife and I stumbled upon a local group selling heirloom tomato plants a couple of years ago. We grew a few and soon realized why they became heirlooms. The nicest thing that c

I guess you have to assume that any message in transit over a public network is public. Of course, you can use something like PGP to encrypt messages before sending them, provided that the recipient has your key. I know of a few people who

The purveyors of this kind of reporting want you to blame your aging neighbours, not the exploiting classes who actually legislate the system.
