Not so—I'm merely pointing out where the burden of justification lies, not staking out a contrary position. Merely asserting that something is unique doesn't serve to justify the implication that uniqueness is a virtue.

Is uniqueness in and of itself a virtue? Or being "part and parcel of x "? Hooliganism used to be part and parcel of the English game; that didn't mean it was a good thing. The blowing of vuvuzelas at football games might have many things

Thanks for the correction, of course you're right. For some reason I always confuse the two names (this isn't the first time I've written one when I meant the other...). I'd edit my original comment to prevent future confusion but the editi

His review of Black's 'Neural Networks for Pattern Recognition' made me chuckle, and accorded with my own experience of the book. To the reviewer who said "I was looking forward to a detailed insight into neural networks in this b

I switched to Rails 3 (and Ruby 1.9.2-pre, which seems a lot more solid than 1.9.1 anyway) to get round this.

Agreed. This is precisely the reason I release most of my code under the BSD license. I'm happy for other people to use my code, modify it to suit their needs, and embed it in larger projects with more restrictive licenses, but I emphatical

The problem with replacing parseInt with the unary + operator is that they don't have the same semantics. +"" evaluates to 0, while parseInt("", 10) evaluates to NaN. Tricks like this are fine if you know that it won't matter for your input

The application of mathematics is a practical matter; I am not entirely sure what "high philosophy" is, but mathematics is also a conceptual, abstract discipline which can be investigated with no concern whatsoever for practical applicati

No, it's function composition as seen in e.g. pure functional programming languages like Haskell: (.) :: (b -> c) -> (a -> b) -> a -> c Except that of course in an impure language like JavaScript if you compose some func

No way to move files between repositories and retain their history. Luke Palmer talked about this a little here: http://lukepalmer.wordpress.com/2008/11/12/sketch-of-udon-ve...

As a matter of general principle I agree with this, but I've had so many problems with 1.9.1, I moved to 1.9.2-pre, and it's been working a lot better.

It's not merely sexist, it's misleading. When the LGP-30 was in use in the late '50s (the RPC 4000 was introduced in 1960), the proportion of women in the field was higher than it is today. When "programmers were men", more of them were wom

Dive Into HTML5 [1] demonstrates how one can detect placeholder support; the obvious use case is to use the focus and blur events to mimic the functionality if native support isn't present. Here's some example code, using Ojay [2]. /*

That seems like an excellent piece of advice. I already practice a variant of this—I read a book on the bus every morning—but perhaps I'll try getting up a little earlier and getting some reading done before I even leave the house.
