Figure out how to get more consistent freelance work and then do that. Keeping it simple -- 2017 was a pretty good year for me otherwise so I don't need to really add anything to the mix so to speak other than this. Share more things t

Some really good suggestions here, so I'll just add: become acquainted with a code search tool (I used grep for a long time, now ag -- I don't think the tool matters that much for most purposes as long as you are comfortable with

I would say that living in the middle of nowhere has certainly harmed me, which is somewhat related if the reason you want to work remotely is to say, relocate from a tech city to a rural area. I am slowly figuring out that the onus is on m

I get work through the whoishiring freelancer thread. I might even be breaking even once you account for all the time I waste reading the articles ;)

I recommend doing both. It also pays (literally) to check the normal "who's hiring" thread as companies sometimes post contract opportunities there instead of in the freelancer thread.

There's been a lot of good advice thrown out there, so I'd just add that you might consider looking into a sleep study. I had untreated sleep apnea and it was like waking up with a hangover every morning.

I find writing documentation as I go to be a particularly good form of this. I start before I fully understand how I'm going to solve something, and only check the documentation in once it's correct.

I think most MUDs definitely fall under what you described as "kill bandit," (as do many graphical MMOs), but I do recall a few exceptions. I remember God Wars II, for example, as a game that had more complex and interactive comba

Start simple. If you haven't written an interpreter, do that first. Then figure out how to write a similar program that emits code for a virtual machine rather than evaluating the language. I'd keep an eye on http://www

Well, I'm kinda intrigued by the Redux/C++ idea. Will there be notes or video from the conference? I looked through the talks page but couldn't find anything that seemed like that.
