Honestly I don't think FreeBSD should focus on desktop story at all. Resources, as limited as they are, should be spent on making FreeBSD an obvious and compelling choice for the servers. Although FreeBSD looks cleaner and more consist

I call it "sharpening the saw". If you're working at a factory, the time you spend to sharpen the saw, so you can continue to work, is paid and no one is questioning that. Also, factory workers are not learning how to use ne

We have started a project with SQLite as the data store, but ended up replacing it with Firebird embedded due to two main reasons: - Lost decimal places on a simple database round-trip. - Issues with accessing the DB from multiple threads.

What would you state as the top reason(s) to choose SmartOS vs Linux for those use-cases?

That's how you end up with unmaintainable solutions and code-bases which die under the cost of just trying to keep the system running, and because they lose the ability to evolve.

There's a conspiracy theory guy (David Ike) who claims there's always the same pattern here: problem - reaction - solution. You create a problem to provoke people reaction and then offer them a solution, which ultimately results i

And rightly so! What's wrong with spreading awareness about safer alternative? If that wasn't the case in the past, we'd still be programming in Cobol and Fortran.

That's why I'm saying semver is not a good fit for product versions. It's too technical and doesn't fit well with PR, marketing and product management.

Also, major new feature, even though it is backward compatible, is a better reason for major version number increase.

Because a backward incompatible change can be required to implement a small feature or even fix a bug, which does not justify major version bump from the production life cycle perspective.

I never found stric following of semantic versioning to be a good fit for product versions. It makes sense only for libraries and packages.
