I've a similar story, but about my father in the 1980s. He worked in London as a shop fitter and then carpenter/kitchen fitter locally in the Midlands when not doing those jobs. It's a skilled job, requiring years to become g

You're quite low down in the comments list, but I actually like this and do something similar. I actually put all my files somewhere else - just in case I need them I can find them in a search. I then focus

Both are relatively complex now and I don't have a precise answer for 'lines of code' for you. Competitor Monitor has evolved for 5-6 years and has various subsystems including image matching, crawling, proxy management and m

I run a number of side projects and have done since the mid 1990's. I started in business when I was 21 and I'm now 47, so definitely considered 'old' to some of you on here! I've been o reader of HN since it came

Can you be a bit more specific about what you are wanting to look at. Is it a broad overview or are you wanting to look into (or become an expert in) a focused area?

SourceGuardian is old-school installable software, not an SaaS. It has been ran by myself and a friend in Russia who I have only met once in 17 years! We built it for our own use, as we are developers and because we frequented forums where

That's really useful. Depends how many of the engines (Magento etc) use this - but I'll look into it. Thank you

I have a side project to monitor the homepage of every domain and I want to detect the type of site - ecommerce, blog, forum etc. I've just started on it and ultimately I want to be able to automatically extract data, such as product i

Very. One of the first was in Scotland. Great to visit as you drive into the mountain and I think one of the Bond files had a scene filmed in it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruachan_Power_Station

Quick question. Could you use Scrapy to specific individual pages from thousands (or millions) of sites, or would you be better off using a search engine crawler like Nutch for this? I want to crawl the first page of a number of specific s

We use Scrapy for a few projects and it is really really good. They have a commercial-side to them, which is fine, but for anyone doing crawling/scraping I'd strongly recommend it. Good article also

Thanks again. Both of my children are now on it and I actually find it quite addictive too! We really had fun with it this weekend, so appreciate it.

This is great. My youngest son (8) was talking to me in the car last night about learning to code. This would be ideal for him. Indeed, in just checking it out I somehow ended up doing 5 levels! :) Thanks for the link

This is impressive and a good implementation. Having dealt with large databases for a while I'm curious about your technology stack and how have you built the database to handle the variety of applications?
