Oh no! Cheap goods and services! Maybe some other governments will be smart enough to not let a massive influx of nearly free stuff make everyone materially worse off. In fact it seems like only a completely idiotic system would make peop

You are not aphantic. We can argue whether that's average or below average, but people with aphantasia can't do it at all. TFA uses the word "hypophantasia" at least once.

Hm, same for me, although my margin for error on how well I know this is now very wide thanks to this thread. I did think I had below average visual phantasia and I get songs stuck in my head all the time. I also read by imagining a voice (

Yep. I remember doing an exercise where we would take a photo of something, divide it into 1cm squares (that's 0.4 freedom units) and then draw the same grid on a block of wood and copy it by chiseling one square at a time. The result

I don't navigate by visualizing the road ahead, I mostly navigate by recalling what I saw on Google Maps. Yes, always with north at the top and if I rotate the map 90 degrees it'll be completely unfamiliar - I have tried that - I

Oddly, it keeps shifting to cutting a slice out of the apple instead. But with a bit more focus, yes. Even with the specific peeler I have in the kitchen, which has a blue handle. Maybe I'm not actually below average.

note that many autistic people (overrepresented on HN) have face blindness which is (probably) a separate thing. They don't develop the specific specialized circuits for recognizing facial features.

If the concept of the mind's eye seems like a giant troll to you, you're either aphantasic or haven't connected the right dots. Can you remember a song? If so, can you do something similar with a picture?

I don't know if everyone is like this, but low-res is not to be deemphasized. When another comment had a test about bicycles, I can see the shape of a bicycle frame, but I definitely can't see how many gears it has unless I zoom i

Now I'm wondering if the mental focus that a trained mage requires to sustain an underworld portal, or any other spell, is the same feeling as an ordinary person in real life uses to hold a visualisation.

That's how it went for me. I thought of the correct shape of a bicycle frame (I think I've seen this art thing before) but didn't "pull up" the little pieces like gears and seats until you actually mentioned them.

I think when I dream it feels real, but upon closer analysis, it's about as unstable as when I imagine things. It's just overlaid with the additional semantic vector of "yes this is the real world and everything is normal&q

After reading your comment I went to see the test. The scale shows the same picture in four different opacities, which isn't useful. The textual descriptions were more useful.

It is definitely different from seeing something. I'd guess it activates a subset of the semantic level neurons that activate when you see a thing. There are no actual pixels. I also guess that something similar happens in dreaming. Wh
