Not to disrespect Dan here, each discovery is impressive on its own but I wish we had a better way to preserve this sort of knowledge.

@dang - I hit "reply" once (I am sure of that) and I see my (identical) comment twice in the UI. Not sure what sort of logging/tracing/instrumentation you have in place - I am not delete'ing this so you have a chanc

I am not sure the wheel can be rediscovered many more times but definitely check out Kris's work from around 2010-2012 around q-connection and streaming/rpc of chunks of data. Promises themselves have roots in this and there are b

A node worker_thread is not a thread either though :]

> Unlike Node.js, Rust's Tokio allows us to spawn a new Task and run futures within it. Nice article! For future reference in Node.js this would be `worker_threads` or if you want a higher level tokio like API something like https:

I worked for 4 startups that were operating for years at a loss with revenue, all are profitable today and all were acquired. My current startup is also not profitable, we're burning money but we're already signing big contracts a

They raise more capital and get more debt and try to lower burn rate but the original comment was talking about the 2010s mindset of "growth before profit" where you want more users/revenue to get acquired by a bigger player

As a contrast to your take - I work for a backup company and I was really surprised to discover most of our customers (big enterprises) really do not care about 99% of metadata restored correctly and are fine with just restoring the data. (

Sure it does, it competes on many fronts like Office (vs docs), Sharepoint (vs Google Drive), Azure (vs GCP) and many others. Most of these have a direct relationship to Chrome vs. Edge - for example the Google workspace suite (docs, sheets

Yes that's what I wanted to know, in particular I use DuckDB with DBeaver all the time to explore/play with parquets and other stuff - why would I prefer their new UI?

I primarily use Rust at my job (and love it) but I still write most of my scripts, benchmarking code etc in Python. Python is a great scripting language and a great language to wrap other stuff. I have other projects in Python that wrap man

Can you explain why you did the naive algorithm here and not any of the fast matrix multiplication ones that trade multiplications for more additions? Just for educational purposes or is there a performance benefit in the technique?

When I worked at the Excel team our motto was Excel is the second best tool for everything. I'm excited to see more players in this space though, all the standards are open and there are decent libraries with decent licenses that exist

Hey, I worked with Jonathan on 1JS a while ago (on a team, Excel). Just a note OMR (the office monorepo) is a different (and actually much larger) monorepo than 1JS (which is big on its own) To be fair I suspect a lot of the bloat in both o

Yes I built a lot of stuff (at batch, not to respond to user queries). Mostly large scale code generation and testing tasks.

I don't understand why you need an LLM for this, wouldn't a simple NER + entity normalization do this at a fraction of the cost? (congrats on the launch!)

Hi, I work for Microsoft (just a dev), all (most?) our apps are actually designed to work with third party compliant hosting with an open protocol called WOPI. So for example you can use Excel online with Sharepoint/OneDrive (two diffe

C# does this already https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/csharp/language-ref... - works pretty well. It's good that Java is finally getting more ergonomic these past few years.

Microsoft mostly gives different groups autonomy in what tools to use, where to host etc. Most groups in Microsoft use the Microsoft stack as it's best supported and already compliant and works pretty well - so most groups use teams, o

Good point, and conversely, web components can't since they must be registered in JavaScript before the side loads. Hydration solutions exist but are usually worse and come with surprising tradeoffs and harm composabilitiy.

We have at least ±5 more changes on the way to improve streams significantly (Node streams, then web streams), reduce the size of each stream and hot-path common cases.
