If it is an exercise in deterrence the actor responsible might see displaying a calculated degree of belligerence as a feature not a bug.

It seems like a lab leak was always the most parsimonious explanation. Now that we aren’t in the middle of Covid and don’t have a distractingly incompetent administration I think we are going to see a re-estimation of probabilities and a lo

I hope my thinking on this is overly pessimistic but I think wearing masks is going to be perhaps the biggest lightning rod in America for a while. It’s going to act as a proxy issue for many other sociopolitical and psychological issues th

I think my favorite quote from the article is: “If they then choose to ignore the indicators and ride with the In&box inactive, that's on them and we can expect it not to inflate in the event of a crash.” When their product doesn’t

Directly attacking the health of US personal would be a hugely provocative act. I’m not saying the Russians wouldn’t do it. There are reports that they paid out bounties in Afghanistan to attack US troops. But launching a campaign to enfeeb

I've always thought of Twitter as an indigestible enormous chatroom, that users interact with via the aid of different kinds of filters. The format and platform do sometimes exasperate negative tendencies but I think the primary design

The main thing that has me cheering Wayland on is that it seems like the only, really viable, path forward for the Linux desktop environment. The developers of X11, and more or less the rest of the Linux community, decided that X11 wasn’t t

Can you explain how this relates to hackers being the new Luddites? I haven’t had a chance to listen to the podcast yet but I can’t see how it’s description or yours relates to the title.

Yeah nearly every person I encounter does not want to be eaten. Yet they love to eat. An odd disconnect there for me.

Ya, the Library of Congress collection is great, it’s practically the only place I’ve been able to find images of art that is at least 3840 pixels wide that doesn’t need to be upscaled for 4K monitors. Does anyone know any other sources of

You might want to check out Eric Flint’s 1632 series. A small Virginia mining town is sent back in time and translocated to 1631 Germany, the series goes into how they try to build up a more technologically advanced civilization. S. M. Stir

I think what you're saying about causation has a lot of truth to it. I believe one of the other fundamental considerations is simple numbers. Looking at the pictures of the Capitol riot it doesn't look like there were more than a

An unrelated rant about benchmarksgame. Has anyone noticed that the Python implementation of regex beats a lot of the Rust and C implementations? That’s because it uses the PCRE2 library (written in C) which it assumes is installed on the O

I think this is a very real concern. On the other hand, now that we’re approaching the limits of miniaturization specialized silicon seems like the clearest path, on the hardware side, to achieve continued performance gains.

You may be right, it’s certainly a complex area. But I do think this will put a lot of wind in the sails of Mapbox’s competitors. The inevitable fork of version one will serve most people’s needs and it may pick up some real momentum. But m

I can’t address many of your objections but I don’t think putting it in a van would be a problem. Organizations sometimes use fiberglass body panels that look like normal metal ones but are transparent to RF in these kinds of situations.
