It is fascinating. Imagine if we did detect a radio signal from intelligent life elsewhere. What sort of reply would we send them? I imagine it would be every sort of reply imaginable, as everybody with access to a radio telescope gave it t

I imagine you could do slightly better. Maybe from the edge of Siberia to the south of Spain, or Singapore to the north of Norway. Walking to London has a big obstacle in the way, the English Channel. I'm not sure how he intends to dea

I notice a tendency with new interfaces that you need to know "secrets" in order to use them effectively. Things that aren't visible in the user interface. E.g., in unity, to open two instances of an application, you need to

Which would be nice for owners. Recharge your battery until it shows signs of age. Then swap it out repeatedly until you get a newish one, then go back to recharging only.

I encrypt some data with gpg -c before storing it online (offsite backups are useful after all). However I'm now contemplating whether my password is vulnerable to brute forcing. May need even more bits of entropy, while still being ab

Of course the Afghans are going to hate the US if you are killing their children. Imagine the uproar if an Afghani had set off a bomb in the US which caused the same casualties. Actually you don't have to imagine, you have the recent B

If you shop around a little, you'll find banks in Australia that don't charge account fees. And I'm not convinced that ASIC will pay decent interest rates, since the government cash rate is lower than typical bank rates for deposits (again

But you'd think in that case that any sign of activity on the part of the owner would be enough to determine that they aren't dead. E.g., logging in to online banking or answering a phone call from the bank. Now with this new Australian reg

I'd go further and say the ability to switch off the logical parts of your brain is essential when dealing with the financial markets. Trying to understand why the markets are doing what they are doing is not only a waste of time when tradi

I agree with you. The idea of "mining" these numbers using an ever-increasing amount of computing power is simply absurd. They'd have done better to allocate the coins in some other way .. I don't know how, maybe distributed equally among H

Voting seems unattractive to me. If I trusted somebody and had enough respect for their work to give them commit access to a repo of mine, then I'd also trust them to merge whatever 3rd party patches they wanted. No point in tying things up

Perhaps it would also have been useful if they had addressed the pre-1972 recording issue that came up recently. I.e., they don't appear to be covered by the DMCA safe-harbor provision, leading to unintended liability. See: http://arstechn

I can't reproduce your results: I find typical searches give 1 or 2 links to Wikipedia on the first page. And if you add "-wikipedia" you can get rid of the lot. I do realise Wikipedia is far from perfect. So many articles don't cite their

Nice article, since it's very similar to what I did. However, I had to work 11 years longer for it. I guess I wasn't as well paid, or not as efficient. Also, after 6 years of retirement, I don't know yet if my situation is completely stable

This is outdated, I believe. These days there is no easy way for NZ citizens to become Australian citizens. However they can still live and work in Australia, but remain second class in various ways, such as not having access to many types
