Which functional language is the closest to being "mainstream"?

Probably. I also switched to DuckDuckGo, and it generally works fine. On Google, I would get banners suggesting that I set my privacy settings, but it would say I had to log into a Google account to use it.

Sure if you want to use online navigation / tracking you'd need to have it switched on. In many other cases, this wouldn't be necessary.

I suppose the safest method would be to switch off a phone, or switch it to airplane mode, while driving. Would a requirement to use such an app while driving prevent that approach?

They apparently want anyone to be able to easily connect and talk to developers, except for trolls, scammers, spammers etc. I'm not really sure what kind of authentication provides that, but they seem to have something in mind.

Surely someone has to run their own SMTP servers, or there won't be any SMTP servers. So how is it decided who can run SMTP servers and who can not, and is this a good method?

I think you could use a curried read function, in this case. The read function would be passed as an argument instead of your I/O stream. I fear I've slipped somewhat into OO habits by using Go interfaces.

Yes, I think even building a completely self-sufficient city in a desert on Earth, with the ability to build its own equipment including computers may be beyond us at this point. Obviously it would be a lot easier than doing it on the Moon

Yes, of course humans already colonized most of the world in prehistory. Even remote Pacific islands had been colonized before 1000AD.

I've read about some of the early British colonies in Australia, and doesn't seem to have taken long before they were laying out farms, making bricks and quarrying stone blocks, constructing solid buildings, setting up blacksmiths

There were other differences. In those days, they were colonizing places where they could easily adapt their existing ways of life. Their technological base was small enough that the colonies could become relatively self-sufficient quickly.

Something similar(?) would be to use a Go map to keep track of which items have already been seen. It would only need one pass through the array, with some map hashing overhead.

I thought that the history is supposed to be available for legal reasons. It's the only way that contributors to the article are attributed, as required by the Creative Commons licensing. Edit: quite a bit of the history is unavailable
