Linux didn't even exist until the 1990s. Edit: and the article clearly states, incorrectly, "That behaviour survived — untouched — through nearly half a century of Linux distributions."

I'm also such an old PC (Linux) person. However, I'm using the phone more these days, either to read books while I'm out and waiting and have nothing else to do, or to listen to audiobooks while I'm walking or working on

That's something a bit odd about Douglas Adams's reply. Arthur Dent isn't heroic, but he's the hapless protagonist. The protagonist doesn't have to be a hero. I'm not sure in what way he has "non-heroic he

Fictional textual descriptions of 16-year-olds having sex are theoretically illegal where I live (a state of Australia.) Somehow, this hasn't led to the banning of works like Game of Thrones.

The US only switched to the life + 70 system in recent decades, and it doesn't retroactively apply. I think if you add a child as a coauthor, the copyright will last longer. Nobody seems to do that, probably because it now lasts long e

How many "great products and services" even need a lot of RAM, assuming that we can live without graphics-intensive games?

Isn't one a subset of the other? A system with federation must have multiple instances, but a system with multiple instances doesn't need to federate (in the sense of information passing between independently managed instances.)

You'd have to have a lot of trust that the one instance wouldn't get enshittified and end up as another X / Truth Social / BlueSky. Different instances can also have different rules, different moderation and different fe

Fear of AI scrape? I'm just amused at the idea of my words ending up manipulating chatbots to rewrite stuff that I've written, force-feeding it in some distorted form to people silly enough to listen.

I don't know Zig. The article says "Many people seem confused about why Zig should exist if Rust does already." But I'd ask instead why does Zig exist when C does already? It's just a "better" C? But has t

Flu has a long track record in causing pandemics with new variants, e.g., the Spanish flu in 1918–1920. Outbreaks spread much faster now thanks to air travel. We do have the advantages of P2 masks and mRNA vaccines.

I have tried Debian, but I found that the software on the main version was out-of-date, and the testing version eventually broke during an update (which is when I abandoned it.) It's not something I'd recommend to a new Linux user
