In what way is this not an ad hominem? Which of his specific points are you disagreeing with? What platitudes? What are examples of his writings or talks where he is not clear to you?

This is a lovely story. Thanks. I’m quite a bit more liberal than my family, and we manage to get on too, with basically this approach. Over the years we’ve also found plenty of areas of agreement, if we stay off the hot button topics. It g

So you’re saying that we should promote fascism to our children? ...obviously you did not say that- it’s a ridiculous straw man. As is your first paragraph. This whole area is rife with complexity, nuance and extremely difficult trade-offs.

Your numbers don’t disagree with the article. The data in the article tell us that most of those 446 deaths in which C19 played a part would have happened in the next few years anyway. So we would expect fewer people to die in Bergamo next

Is this calculation as simple as: it takes order of 10 years to build a reactor using existing tech, and we don’t have that long left?

If by “knock you off your diet” you mean “knock you out of ketosis”, then eating enough protein will do that. I experimented with a keto diet for a neurological condition. I invested in some blood ketone measuring strips and was surprised h

Same. Not sure why you're getting downvoted. People have been saying we need to avoid scaring people for decades, and look where we are. Panic now, helpfully, to avoid panic later when we are more helpless. I don't know what other

Interestingly, some of the issues Cummings is concerned with are similar to those raised in the 1968 Fulton Report https://civilservant.org.uk/csr-fulton_report.html

Agreed. But if we’ve learned anything from the last 4 years it’s that “low quality lies” (which I’ll read as “obvious untruths”) presenting a simple message are fiendishly, fiendishly difficult to defend against when the truth is complex an

Hey, a left-leaning folk here (in that I broadly approve of Labour’s manifesto, if not its execution or current leadership). The things Cummings gets right are already well-discussed, among the lefties in my social group at least. And he ge

Cummings shares some qualities with the rest of that list, but he’s not a nationalist if you believe his extensive blogging. Although he is comfortable using the language of nationalism, which perhaps amounts to the same thing practically.

His reading list is excellent. I enjoy many of the same thinkers he does, and it pains me that Cummings associates himself with the rationalists. Alan Kay and Paul Graham will be unaffected by being name-dropped I’m sure. Lesswrong and slat

I read a sentence just before our first son was born that I’m glad I heard. “One day, your parents put you down and never picked you up again”. Every time my son woke me up in the night I would cherish every exhausted second of holding him.

Goop is on to something important I think that it’s worth listening to, even if Goop and the wellness movement need to go away. The way we have organised society, including the way we practice medicine, is not fantastic for human well-being

This was such an exciting comment to read. It’s easy to forget how many potentially revolutionary ideas are yet to be tried, once we remember the power of good government. Although I am also skeptical of hyperloop delivery, it seems worth c

I’m too tired to respond in detail but this underestimates the scale of the problem. There is no “adapting” to the scenario if we don’t stop kicking out CO2. We’re talking billions dead and most large species extinct, over the course of dec
