I am not saying nor implying that what the Big 4-5 are doing is illegal. I'm merely noting that these companies have an outsized influence and the ability to force the markets to behave in specific ways, not all of which are beneficial

While definitely not a monopoly under the contemporary definition, I do not find it hard to believe that these companies are having an outsized influence on markets, society and politics. They end up having monopolistic effects without actu

This is disingenuous. Yes elastic cloned an open source project and improved it in some measure but also made the access free for a decent chunk of the features. Most of what is under the paid license in the elastic stack has less to do wit

Can you point me to some high quality podcasts? Most I have listened to have so much fluff and unnecessary banter that I subconsciously tune out. I have been trying to get on the podcast bandwagon but having a hard time finding something to

I find 12 hours a day to be too much. And 6 days a week is throwing the mental health of a person off a cliff. I’ve frequently found, personally and observing others, that productivity drops after 6h of continuous work especially if it forc

Google still stores location history even if you switch it off. There was a report on this just a couple of weeks ago. The point about carriers is the most valid though. That’s the weakest point in location privacy.

Kobo is not always DRM Free. I see plenty of mention about Adobe DRM on a lot titles, especially those published by big five.

Depends on your use case. If you are just storing text string, simple notes, using it as a scratchpad or maybe a todo list, then yeah, it's hard to justify pricing. But some note services are the backbone of some people's workflow

In India we do both. Teach them how to fish as well as hand out lots of fish - government’s byzantine number of subsidises or continuous farm loan wavers.

Most of it is not due to religion but the sheer overwhelm that you just shut off your senses. You can keep on giving and giving and giving and giving and giving. It will not stop. Most people, I know, middle class Indians who are doing dece

You might have to use the big platforms to gain traction initially but as soon as you get a decent following and a customer base you should start hedging your risks. Any of these companies can pull the rug from underneath you. Especially cr

While this is how it should be I find reality to be a lot different. The cultural shift required is so massive that I don’t think it will happen anytime soon, if at all. People have become accustomed to open source software. Critical infr

I think we're diverging. The mental model of a Rails developers is well formed and if you're a beginner then you can rely on a very strong community for opinions, best practices and conventions to follow. This greatly decreases co

When I started, Java and Spring were (still are..) enterprise (Ruby and Rails existed but were not popular in my area and network) and the major criticism in my mind was the difficulty faced as a beginner. Spring was humongous and had so ma

This is actually the bane of JS community's existence. JS developed so fast and so wildly that there was never a breather to form and write down best practices or opinions. This is jarring to someone coming from the Rails world where a

True. You’ll loose some productivity but not as much as jumping ship to a complete JS stack. And I’m saying that as a full time JS Dev. The author is completely tearing out rails for JS without giving a solid reason or context for it.

What’s the harm in using rails purely as an API? You’ll still get a lot of functionality out of the box and maybe have to write just a little bit more glue code for the JS-backed front end than what rails provides out of the box.

I’ve been following this for sometime but it’s gotten tedious. I’d love a weekly digest option too. There are a lot of days when I skip the morning mail and then 15-20 of these are backlogged.

I’m dealing with this right now. There just needs to be a single anxious thought and I’ll be crippled with the fear of failure - what if it doesn’t workout, what if this, what if that - and consequently my productivity gets destroyed.

This is true. I'm crawling with 2 Mbps on Airtel for the past 3-4 months. Jio has always been at 0.8-0.9 Mbps. Vodafone has similar issues. Indian 4G rarely gives the 40-50 Mbps or more that you can see in other countries
