Yes. I interviewed 10ish grad schools, and some were clearly more supportive than others. Either in terms of the personalities of professors, or in the policies around funding and graduation. I chose a school where I thought I would be happ

Ten minutes talking with this man single-handedly turned me off from attending Harvard grad school. Any environment that would promote him to (I believe) head of the department was not one I wanted to study in. Glad to see I made the right

On average, 4+ hours of screen time has a negative effect on babies. That’s what the article is claiming and nothing you’ve said invalidates it. I’m not sure why you keep bringing up older kids here or citing your own anecdotes (which again

Are you literally using personal anecdotes to invalidate data-driven research? What controls did you have in your ‘study’?

The meta analysis you’re citing covered children up to age 12, with a mean age of 35 months. Again, this study isn’t saying that all screen time is bad, just that it’s not good for babies (i.e younger than the 1-2 year olds you are sharin

I see a lot of comments here saying that there are different types or qualities of screen time, but not one addressing the fact that this is a study of babies . Babies don’t play video games, solve puzzles, or interact with videos. Especia

What sort of interactive screen time do you think a 6-month old does?

For babies research has shown that screen time is undifferentiated. Babies learn from watching real humans talk. Not from a screen. And screens mean that caregivers use fewer words as well. For older kids there is a lot of nuance. But in

We have a full legal system based on parents or guardians being able to provide consent for their kids. How is this different?

I don’t think that’s true at all. Elon allowed any employee who wanted to quit with three months’ severance. Anyone who wasn’t a true believer and had options could have quit.

If that’s the case shouldn’t there be at least one screenshot of this behavior happening? I’ve heard dozens of anecdotes over the years. You think that at least one restaurant owner would screenshot their rating and the number of reviews a

I haven’t found in-person meetups to be that useful. In my experience they only really started happening in late 2021/early 2022 due to the pandemic, and since then they’ve been severely curtailed due to the market downturn. So when yo

Yes, but even your link says that complications are uncommon. I’m not advocating waiting until you’re on death’s door, but isolating and waiting 2-3 days to see if you’re getting better is fine.

I don’t have any citation, but if you google bacterial ear infection or strep throat you’ll see that it’s true. And my pediatrician agrees with me, even if the urgent care docs don’t mention it.

Wow, I’m shocked (and heartened) to hear that your experience has been so different. Maybe it’s just the area I’m in or my healthcare provider. I always expect to be told “it’s a common cold, get the kid some rest and leave urgent care to t

Having kids has shown me how much of medicine is about incentive alignment, rather than doing no harm. Every time one of my kids gets an ear infection, pinkeye, or a sore throat, my daycare requires a doctor’s note and antibiotics to be giv

Genuinely curious: How are these mortgages more sensitive to interest rate rises than average? I’m sure I’m missing something but it seems like a mortgage on the books is a done deal, so long as the homeowner pays up.

I was surprised at the 2 hour number too, but then I remembered that there are a ton of stay at home moms or parents on parental leave who have the tv on all day for background noise. Being home alone all day can be isolating, and for some

You are correct. And Meta isn’t paying a 40% premium due to that 8 acres, it’s functionally no worse than any other company I’ve been in with an open-office plan. Longer lines of sight but somehow less noisy due to a lower density and a str

Yeah, most of this article is pretty unsubstantiated. Meta isn’t paying a 40% premium for open offices, almost every other tech company has a similar floor plan. And pre—Covid the offices were much more than 30% utilized, I’m guessing that

If the Twitter saga has shown anything, it’s that companies can afford not to pay on their contracts, at least in the short term. Amazon will give them a grace period because a customer paying a few weeks late is better than the customer go

How is the fact that Indian employees got no severance irrelevant?

▲

That statement is inaccurate for many reasons. Employees in India and other countries were offered nothing. The “severance” is really 1 month severance and 2 months garden leave, which is required under WARN and may not be paid if employees
