I liked the old google of the 2000s, focused on search and being scrappy and quirky. Now it’s super corporate without any real identity as far as I can see.

Is CMU trying to compete with Udacity? I personally couldn’t take a degree in AI seriously.

Absolutely insane how this is actual reality. That millions of people have died from such a small object that seems to have more creativity and complexity than I’ve ever seen.

Princeton Companion to Mathematics: this guide is phenomenal in introducing a wide array of pure math topics. Just going through a few pages is hugely inspiring and simultaneously ego-deflating

Best course so far: AI from BerkeleyX Other great courses: Learning to Learn, Irrational Psychology by Dan Ariely, and Algorithms by Sedgewick Can someone recommend a good way to work with other students on MOOCs? I've taken many cours

This reminds me of Enders Game, especially the ending. Don’t want to spoil it for anyone but distributed military intelligence is scary

Just peruse any upper level undergraduate math text. Flip to any proof and you’ll find “it follows naturally that...” The bane of my existence as a math undergrad.

I’m surprised they don’t have a mobile app yet. I’m also jealous since I thought of this idea 5 years ago but did nothing with it! Great service.

As an aside, even in mathematics some proofs can be turn out to be wrong. Like the many wrong proofs for Fermats last theorem even Wiles' original proof. Basically there is some level of uncertainty , e>0 for any statement.

This is a great idea - it's like the medical demos they use ar/vr for but for engineers. Someone should make a VR version for mechanical motions like that How to Make a Car course that was posted here a while ago

Books are just pieces of paper. They only add value when read by a person and add even more value discussed as by a group of people and add substantially more value when discussed by a group of highly competent people with experience. Anyon

The cover for the seminal book on AI (norvig) has a chessboard and games are a fundamental training ground for AI so I'd say there's some truth there.

I mean you can argue that as nice as AlphaGo is, it has not accomplished any thing real outside of being better at some games.

HN seems to be getting more popular as software "eats" up other industries. Topics on the site have definitely migrated away from pure programming and startups - not that that's a bad thing of course.

MIT OCW has been incredible for me as well, but I always get stuck on a concept or wish I was in a structured setting. Any tools or tips that helped you along the way? I was thinking of starting some live study circles for the next topic.

I would argue that memory is even more important now since it allows you to think of new things and connect things in your head. Even if we had a neural chip that gave us all of Wikipedia, it would not be the same as intentionally studying
