These are fine benchmarks for consideration, IFF you are interested in using AWS EC2 instances as a vps. This might not be a terrible endeavor, but it's really not the intended use. EBS performance is an issue - Yes it is, don't u

Totally agree. The only use I see is when you're simply searching for projects/solutions and you want to quickly ascertain popularity and language. That said, I'm not sure I'll remember the color-language relationships w

Ah! I get you - agreed. I think that's a decent solution, it just seems like configuring Chrome to use DDG as the default engine buys you a lot of those configurations in one change. Either way, good results.

These are good notes. You can quibble over some of the specific details and their assigned importance, but generally they show great logical enhancements. To add to the language bar discussion - I rarely care about the languages in my own r

I love this concept, we could use more approachable static-file-cms solutions for non-technicals. Without getting too far into a review/investigation, I do feel like a different name would be appropriate. It's already a language a

I've not investigated the how, or where/when/if data goes places, but consider: 1. In a newly launched chrome incognito window - login to Gmail. 2. Open a new tab and launch Google.com, search for "New Relic" 3. Cli

If markdown isn't your style: Habari or WordPress. If markdown is ok: jekyll/octopress. Pagoda ( https://github.com/alagu/pagoda ) seems like a nice addition to jekyll if you need/want online editing.

Great points. Something like logstash for logging (which supports graphite/statsd type output) is a nice addition to the logging setup. Also, for some apps deploying code during instance launch can be time consuming. Depending on your

DNS is a good solution here, but it also seems appropriate to highlight that you shouldn't need to be connecting to these instances directly. As others said, some type of configuration tool should be in place, logs should be centralize

Colo is great if you do enough work to justify the cost. Most of the cloud free-tiers and low-end machines are far cheaper if you are just doing one-offs and short-term development work on projects. I've found that using the cloud forc

I haven't tried it (EDIT: it = cassandra), but what's wrong with Logstash + ElasticSearch? You get a lot out of the box with Logstash, and you could always push the community to build a Cassandra output plugin (or build it yoursel

Why would you put genuinely private data on anything other than a private server? There are still plenty of good use cases for rental hardware. Also, using services that provide ephemeral and virtual data storage seems like a decent way to

I think Kiln's wrappers for supporting Git and Mercurial on the same project are impressive, but I can't see a good business case for allowing that to happen within your organization. Personally, the Fogbugz flow and implementation is way t

I think one of the big issues with JIRA is that it's configurable enough to be a project management tool. It's a really great issue tracker (IMO), and I think when you aim to use it as more than that (involve proper releases, milestones, sc

These are appropriate considerations to have; and the concerns about performance are very well-founded. Nonetheless, the values I see in EC2 and AWS come in the API, role management, and the centralization of services. Being able to automat

I'm not directly associated with Piwik, but your complaints are valid. The Piwik project recently moved to Github, and some of that transition is lagging as most effort goes to the code itself.
