I've been wanting to learn C++ (as a data scientist), but never know where to start. There are so many books that were about modern c++ when they were written, it's impossible for an outsider to know what's up to date. Is the

With data analysis, performance can really help even when it isn't paramount. If I am doing some exploratory analysis and it takes 20 minutes to run instead of a couple seconds, I can iterate much, much faster. This is huge.

The unstated reasoning is that it isn't luck. I disagree, but I'm pretty sure that's it.

I deliberately tried not to come off as pessimistic. I'd just seen a pop science article on this paper that went along the lines of "OMG, 10^-24? That's so small! Aliens are basically guaranteed!" It was totally exploiti

How about a nice compromise where if the person asks whether they have to comply to a request, the government has to respond truthfully? As far as I know, there are no such requirements.

One in 10^24 seems like really easy odds to beat. Basically anything should happen more often than that, right? But if we choose a random 17 letters of the alphabet, the odds that they spell "probabilistically" is less than that.

Optimizing CTRs is not at all zero sum. Advertising a board game to me instead of beyonce tickets doesn't take my clicks away from Beyonce. I'm just not interested in seeing her show. Another client might be the reverse.

Google products seem to often be terrible for your battery. Even on firefox, having google docs or gmail or whatever open sets of that damned google talk plugin that devours my battery. So much of android too, from what I remember. Seems li

Assuming you know basic algebra and calculus already, learn introductory statistics and linear algebra first. Then pick up a book like http://www-bcf.usc.edu/~gareth/ISL/ (or companion lectures http://w

This is how I began my career. I fell into programming by way of physics, and for things like sorting I always knew better than to try to roll my own sorting algorithm. Every language has well tested, finely tuned libraries for that! But my

I had that reaction to my brother's Vive too. It was really amazing. But that doesn't matter. I probably wouldn't spend more than $30 on one. Despite being blown away, there are no compelling games and it gave me a headache.

Feasibility and morality are two totally separate things. Just because two things are equally feasible does not make them equivalent.

You're right that in the case of grabPiFromWebPage returning a JustValueOrError, you'd have to apply a jvoeToMaybe function if you wanted to use Maybe's bind. It could be an issue, but in practice, everyone uses the standard
