The newer M.2 SSDs suck up 4 lanes. That's 16 lanes for four drives, burning through all available lanes on a Kaby Lake CPU.

Could this be a protection against selling stolen iPhones? As I remember a "broken TouchID" rates pretty high as a shady phone. Does anyone know how does this work? Can you reset a stolen phone or do they just sell those as parts

Just for the older Retina models. Copied from the link you provided: "Specifically, the "Mid-2012" and "Early 2013" models use a 6 Gb/s SATA-based SSD whereas the "Late 2013" and "Mid-2014"

Same. It makes an otherwise totally fine computer worthless. There was a recall for this problem too ( http://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT203554 ), but it already ended.
