I read a similar article a number of years ago, but at the time there were no negative comments (to my memory). Funny how attitudes have changed.

If he doesn't want more stuff, he's not being noble to say so, he's just telling people what not to get him. If someone gave you a pillow every year, why should it be rude to say, "please don't get me a pillow this year. I have enough pillo

GConf files aren't binary; they're XML. It may not be the greatest format, but it's editable and rgrep-able, and gconf-editor documents many of the keys. Sometimes it's good to declare One True way of doing things just so you know what to

No, because the article says similar work was already known back to 1965, just not 1941. It was already known Google didn't invent the concept.

Due to a bug report of mine, Calibre's[0] ebook reader uses hyphenator[1] to hyphenate ebooks, but it's a useless feature for now because the WebKit it uses doesn't insert hyphens at the ends of lines, just breaks the word in half. Funny,

Looks like he explains his objection at http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html/2010Feb/0360... and says it's not a "formal complaint" at http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-html/2010Feb/0365...

Did you actually try this? "facebook login" in the address bar takes me to the Google results. It only takes you to the first search result if it calculates you had a high probability of wanting to go there, like typing "yahoo". Occasion

According to https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Value_noise (which cites this), this page actually describes value noise, not Perlin. I emailed the author, who told me he no longer has access to the site, so unfortunately, peo

Watch the video in 720p and pause when "Windows 7" pops up. The taskbar isn't black, and there's an "Examples" folder on the desktop, which makes me suspect it's Kubuntu or something.

I think Dijkstra said, but I can't find it, that computing science is the most fashion-obsessed science. Oh, and I assert that the quote can't be found.

I agree; Sass looks more like a macro language. That's not a bad thing; I've wanted variables and calculated values before. Now I know I can have them.

This sounds good. A similar tool is It's All Text! for Firefox ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4125 ). It lets me edit textareas with Emacs. It's only Firefox, but it's cross-platform.

It's interesting that both the Newton and Cube--which the article correctly points out as unsuccessful financially--still have cult followings. From what I've read, the Newton--which is, I believe, the first PDA--did many things better than

Sounds like a contrived reason not to read an article. View->Page Style->No Style. To each their own, but I think anyone who makes a living by their hands ought to do the utmost to protect them from harm. Proper typing posture stave

Defining an artform is supporting the rights and power of the people in their struggle against the privileged elite? That's the only definition of populist (as adj.) I can find; do you mean that?

Do Greasemonkey scripts actually leak less memory than extensions? I use both, but extensions are much better for when you want to customize behavior. Most userscript writers don't know how to use Greasemonkey's customization features, and

I'm glad people are being so critical. Back when I started using The GIMP (v1.x), when people (including me) said Photoshop (v4) had a superior interface, people rushed to The GIMP's defense. The GIMP has gotten more Photoshop-like since th

Does this mean that simple accessors (or at least getters) effectively have no method call overhead? Also, the linked article's linked article mentions (in 2005) that Java 6 would have had this. What happened?
