Just like OneSocialWeb, buddycloud started out using XMPP's built in event stream. We found that this quickly ran out of steam for scaling and was too constrained to build a really good social system. So we pivoted and the new channel serve

Holding a socket open on a mobile costs nothing. Sending data through that open socket will quickly jump the phone into DCH state ( http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0286.html#sect-id115219 ). Polling is worse. Google keep the chat client open

This is happening because it's having to pull down all channel posts instead of storing some of them locally. Not so ideal. A better approach will be to have backbone.js throw them into a local store.

I loved Byte. As a kid growing up in South Africa, Byte was my connection to the outside world. International sanctions made computers incredibly expensive. Byte gave me hope that if I could just get abroad... I would sit for hours in the l

So perhaps a badly written individual server doesn't scale (neither does an individual Apache instance). Google manages to scale XMPP to support each of their Gmail users. Is that big enough? Nokia runs all of the Ovi account on a Tigase-ba

Twitter had an XMPP gateway to send tweets. They were never built on XMPP. Google still uses XMPP. On Android phones this isn't exposed as a service to other apps (if you want that, use Rene Treffer's excellent https://github.com/rtreffer/

Gartner's business model is something along the lines of "make a prediction about tech $flavour-of-the-month to insecure CTOs with a timespan of about three years. Three years later, things have moved on and everyone has forgotten their pre

I agree - it's a fantastic thing to be forking the code. The side effect is that with each fork whatever protocol Diaspora have chosen becomes more entrenched and difficult to change. What I was trying to get at in the article was that app

Don't worry about the verboseness of XMPP - TLS with the deflate option drops that down to 10% of the original size. Or you can do what google did on Android and write your own binary protocol representation. If I setup a new appleseed node

There's two things here: Protocol and the architecture. Protocol-wise I have no problem with http - it's well understood and any RoR dev can pick it up an use it. And indeed you could even, with a lot of work, build a federated network off

Incidentally I see Ben Nolan has released his xmpp port of Diaspora today. This goes some way to assuaging my worries about their architecture. https://github.com/bnolan/diaspora-x

I expect it will be a mixture of German and English. I'm happy in English and German so will find a way to make this work.

If you are interested in, or have questions about federated social networking (Diaspora, OneSocialWeb or buddycloud), I'm keen to find out where you see it going and what is important in a post-Facebook platform.

You are right. I was confusing Symbian^1 with S40. I've heard the 2.3M figure. That sounds about right given our experience and place in the download rank. I'm generally feeling negative about the whole platform now. To me that figure is 2.

It doesn't matter how many low-end phones are sold. It's near impossible to put apps on them and even if the user can find a way to install an app, the users that buy low end phones have very little correlation with those that have a data c

We started buddycloud development before Nokia did anything with Trolltech. Having switched to Qt earlier would have helped and mean that we could easily port to the N900 and what I hope nokia see as the future of their platform. Qt does se

Good. I won't miss their stupid branding ( http://developer.symbian.org/ ). I won't miss their slow app signing ( http://twitter.com/buddycloud/status/13062324669 (ended up taking 6 weeks)). I won't miss all the crap we went through to get

I'll second the Econtalk podcasts. Russ Roberts does a great job of looking into everyday phenomena with a guest and looking at how economics influences so much. Really a good listen.

David, you forgot to include Symbian signing for Nokia and Samsung handsets. This usually runs around $20 per signing. That said, because of some of the things we do with wifi scanning on the buddycloud client, we have to sign four differe
