eGPU isn't an option. Nvidia if you're working with RAW becomes pretty critical and the support for that was greatly reduced with Mojave. RTX cards have been a gamechanger for most of the work we do.

Serviceability of an iMac in a short deadline environment that is running close to 24/7 with sustained graphic and 8K renders / conversions. It's just not the right tool for the job. If I worked on single track edit with long

Apple took it to the max in terms of what IS possible with the Mac Pro. That's awesome. I don't see any of the post-houses I work with on a regular basis chomping a the bit for the power they're offering at $6k though. Most h

If they had done an 8-core i9'ish option with 64gb of RAM and an RTX card equivalent for $3500...I would hit the speed dial to my Apple sales rep.

I don't work in Hollywood, but I work heavily in production engineering for television productions that work on A LOT of 8K RAW video and multicam where time is critical, we have days to edit where hollywood has months and multicam is

I don't think anyone in Santa Cruz wants that. As a long-time Santa Cruz resident, the only people I know who want it to be more are tech people who have been pushed down here cause of shortages over the hill or just like to surf.

Ha. What rental market? What's left is either falling down or something only a Google employee can afford.

There are also rivals to that sony monitor in the $4000 range for reference hardware. It's extremely misleading. It is a really nice display though, but $5k is a painful price point. I would have preferred a retina 27" with those

They didn't mention storage expansion. This was a big red flag. While 250gb is fine for an OS drive, should I ever want to upgrade, what is the catch?

It's more about size and stability. I can have a 100TB volume for under $10,000 that multiple editors can R/W to over 10GbE. We probably average about 400-600mb/s to a client on a simple setup in real world situations, which

Prices have dropped then, cause the G-Speed shuttle I use is 96TB and doesn't cost half that much. I've also used almost every model and in the real world and you don't ever get close to advertised speeds for R/W on tho

I rarely see direct attached storage anymore. It's too cost effective from a media management standpoint to just to right to 10Gbe RJ45 or fiber network storage. The only direct storage I see is if speed is absolutely critical and tha

I'm not sure a Mac Pro is the best use-case for Lightroom users, if you're working on something that requires that kind of speed/power you're probably on something like Photo Mechanic Plus and/or Capture One Pro.

I honestly don't see a use for a computer on wheels though, a cart is more than ideal and holds everything with it.

that's really just to support multiple GPU's if a user decides to add them. At the base model, it's nowhere near that.

We only store the OS and apps, so anytime the storage is full it's usually cause someone hasn't emptied their downloads folder or they're incorrectly caching the the OS drive.

I think if they would have released an i9 model with a better GPU at say, $3499, then they could have sold a lot of them. I don't see any point in server chips and ECC ram being bottle necked by a single weak GPU with proprietary upgra

The same specs as the $6000 base level Mac Pro comes out to $1600. Granted, I would use and Intel i9-9900K, non-server motherboard and non-ECC RAM. As a media production professional who has spent most of my career on a Mac, the original &q

Every machine I've worked on, bought or built has had 256 or 500gb. We only run the OS/apps on the main drive. Then a second drive for scratch disk and then SAN/NAS storage for the media. It's VERY normal.

I fall under this umbrella, as I do journalism, media and TV production work. It looks as if it will have a HUGE impact. But to be honest, I don't think many of the freelancers/contractors really understand any of the fine print.
