I don't think this can be the case given that the program will keep working in reduced functionality mode. This wouldn't be possible in the situation you describe.

Intentionally overshooting can be a legitimate strategy.

Having studied control theory I think it makes perfect sense. When trying to make a system target a new level it's quite natural for there to be overshoot that needs to be reigned in. It's also natural for the correction to go too

Those decisions also make a lot of sense from the C-as-macro-assembler point of view (passing parameters puts values in the places defined by the calling convention, and taking parameters pulls them out) that has of course gradually faded o

"The purpose of a system is what it does". Dangerous principle to apply too literally but almost always worth considering. In this case, the purpose of abstinence-only education is to increase teenage births and the purpose of mod

Still I think it's easier to avoid the need for more people than necessary. "Just lie" sounds like the easiest solution but on closer inspection maybe it is not?

One person can tell a lie, but a company consists of many people. You must ensure that only few people know of the logging or there will be a risk of a leak.

Let's say you have two indices into an array: a and b. You want to know how much earlier a is than b so you compute b-a, but as b was in fact the earlier one you get a negative number. You can deal with this by casting before doing the

A few gigs of disk is not that expensive. Imo they should allocate every paying user (at least) one disk cache slot that doesn't expire after any time. Use it for their most recent long chat (a very short question-answer that could ea

Cornering the market with the intent to flip the goods is not quite the same as cornering the market because you actually want the goods and intend to use them yourself.

I think you misunderstand my question. int 80h is an alternative legacy way that a program can issue syscalls. So without handling that your system may miss some syscalls. Which may be fine, I'm sure they are not that common. But if so

I think the problem is that 1) You want to be able to write arbitrary bytes, including shell escape sequences into files. 2) You don't want to accidentally write terminal escape sequences to stdout. 3) Stdout is modeled as a file. Cons

You are correct that training is necessary, but that isn't the knockout blow you think it is. It goes for many of the specialized tasks (e.g. visual processing, auditory processing, motor skills, spatial awareness) done in the brain. Y

Everything that happens in politics happens because someone managed to assemble a powerful enough coalition. Maybe some people wanted to repatriate gold before, but not enough to make it happen. Now suddenly, there are enough people.

A big part of skill aquisition in humans is moving tasks from system 2 to system 1, to free up the very scarce thinking resources for ever more complex tasks, that can then in turn be internalized and handled by system 1.
