I'd expect it to take a decade at the very least and probably much longer. Don't hold your breath. Like compare it to other experimental stuff like quantum computers, light based computers. Where are they? Not on a shelf near me,

The fact that they it hasn't come out who did it makes me half-wonder if it's because it's very embarassing. Maybe someone connected to intelligence agency, rather than someone connected to Hamas.

This sounds like a good direction: even very infrequent, very brief stutters can be a dealbreaker for hardcore gamers, and make them chose wired over wifi.

I think it's worth asking why the jobs are in the cities. Given our information economy, why do the jobs need to be in the cities? My theory is that humanity (and subset of it) behave a bit like neural network. Social networks - neural

Seems like this is research that is laying foundations for further research, rather than research that tries help doctors solve problems on the ground. Nothing wrong with that.

I remember as a kid I used to peek through this semi-transparent hole in a blanket to look at floaters. I saw dozens and dozens of them. I thought they looked beautiful. At that time I wasn't sure exactly what caused them if it was rel

Eh, aren't the footprints of these datacenters really low compared to all the other things we use space for? Also they don't really need premium land they can be built basically anywhere, so you could put them where nothing could

I have a vivid memory of autoconf. I set it up best as I could. Someone ran ./configure. It triggered a new run of autoconf that failed because of mismatching autoconf version. Why it triggered a new run? Because of mtime checks. Why d

I mean that's what's so good about them. The prior is a bit arbitrary and up for discussion. And Bayesianism is honest about it, it highlights that fact rather than trying to play fast and loose and sweep the issue under the rug

I think the attraction of Bayesianism is kind of philosophical / aesethetical, it is is principled and sound and beautiful approach. It's kinda nice that it kinda extends and translates occams razors into numbers. Yes frequentist

The issue with that is if there is one or a handful of videos that have a significant portion of all youtube views. Most likely they will not be in your sample which could lead to a big underestimate.

I think we must be careful not to use no-true-scotsman here. Imo, an attack should be considered valid if it works against a typical config - one you would arrive at following a popular tutorial, rather than requiring that it must work agai

I see, I suppose that kind of makes sense and is good enough. Maybe it would be nice to be able to mark fields / variables with critical invariants as unsafe, so that only unsafe code change them?

Thing is, it's not possible to stop it. Technology has advanced far enough, all the pieces are in place, so it's inevitable that someone will make this. What we should ask is rather how we can cope with its existence.

I was going to write a long essay about the relation between C and assembly but after thinking for a while, I think there is an easier way to explain it. Stack frames are basically a (single) linked list of information about the call stack.

I think the question we have to ask is why it has such a performance cost, and how we can circumvent it. There are likely multiple necessary changes for it to be fast. One part is implementing the check quickly, this could be hardware assis

If there is to be a push to add structured data to all the unix tools, I wish they would use a format that allows embedding binary data. Yes base64 is an option, but it suffers from the issue that base64(base64(base64(data))) leads to expon
