RAID5 corruption is non-recoverable - you can't tell which is right, the data or the parity. RAID6 is recoverable - you can get consensus between the data and the two parity bits. ZFS stores hashes of each block, so as long as you have

On the last round of zpool scrubs of the 13PB-used set of zfs filesystems here (raidz3, mostly SAS drives, all hosts with ECC RAM), 50MB of data was repaired. 50MB isn't much compared with 13PB, but silent corruption is a real thing.

It's not very common, but there's more than a few projects that use 'learned': https://www.google.com/search?q=changelog+%22learned%22

There were genuine reasons for the CDDL - it wasn't an anti-gpl thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zRN7XLCRhc&feature=youtu.be...

Engineers blogging about Solaris etc. Internals, gotchas, upcoming things, heads-ups on problems. The patching guys' blog was particularly useful in the face of Solaris' atrocious packaging utils, for example. There was a _huge_ a

iTerm2 can copy selections to the system clipboard. That alone is worth the price of entry.

More of an IRL comment - I get recruiters looking for people in Edinburgh at least once a week. Not a peep about tech in Glasgow though.

Lots going on in Edinburgh, not so much in Glasgow. Anyone know why that is?

It sounds very, very much like you are depressed. You should seek medical advice. I don't think there's much else to say, really. Get well, and the rest will follow.

That CPU use is resampling to match the sound card rate. If PA isn't doing it, your apps will be instead. Either way, it's going to take some cycles.

I've had a .name email address since the TLD was released. Never had any problems with validators. 'Name' is a surprisingly easy word to mis-hear over the phone if it's not expected, though.

I'm a big fan of Zabbix for general server monitoring and alerting. Sensible defaults, built in graphing, multi-step web scenarios. Good times.

You can rely on config management if it pulls from a central service and that central service reports failures and hosts not checking in.

My MBA locks up about once a week. Seems to be triggered by closing Firefox tabs with Flash content. The only Windows BSOD I've seen since Win7 came out has been from a dodgy stick of RAM. A stick of RAM that then got passed around a f

Missing some options for extended attributes (SELinux, ACLs) and (on OSX) resource forks. Also, if you're doing multiple backups of the same data to a filesystem over time, it's worth doing 'cp -al' from the previous bac

PuTTY's pretty much relegated to the emergency usb key these days. Runs on pretty much any Windows and without installing, but not really ideal for heavy use imho. Cygwin + urxvt + clusterssh is the choice of Windows-mandated champions

An article claiming that only 11% of findings could be reproduced doesn't cite its sources, thus rendering the findings of the article unreproducible. Nice work!

True. Unfortunately Firefox had a bit of a moment to itself and did the looping sample thing, then hung while playing. It was so loud. There was no escape. Had to pull the battery to end the ordeal.
