I just tested a meta refresh inside a noscript tag. It works (in FF, at least). I'm sure it would make some validator angry, but it would make automatic redirection easy for the js-disabled case.

Google should have checked for this before offering these numbers. In a lot of NPAs (area codes) there just aren't any never-assigned numbers left. My brother waited, for months I believe, for a GV number in 512 (Austin).

Two potential problems: 1) I don't recall who it is, but someone who is not google holds a patent (sigh) on using the URL path after the host as the search string. 2) If it was my property to control, I would not want google.com/{*} to accu

I think he means he would like a boolean response to "Do you know what this is?" not, "please give me whatever information you have in your cache". Although I can see it the latter way, as well, and it's reasonable to ask for an ebay clone

I wonder if Microsoft hires programmers and Google hires software engineers? I don't think that's a fair assessment of the developers themselves. I would write it up to differences in product release mentality -- it takes a different mind

In theory yes, but many many consumer ISPs filter the TCP ports required to do this, so it might not be as successful as one would expect.

I work in the same building as BGC3. Since he moved in I have hoped to bump in to him in the elevator. It hasn't happened yet. :) BGC3 appears to be Bill's business presence now that he's not at MS on a day-to-day basis. A very common busin

Google undercutting their hardware partners would be suicide for future phone wins. Moreover, since Google doesn't do their own hardware, this would surely be the last time HTC partnered with them and they'd be up a creek for future hardwar

Often people (I, at least) don't care what it costs to make a product, but rather care what value it provides. I'd take a free phone (duh), would probably take a chance at $399, but flirting with $550 is beyond the pain point for me. I supp

It's really cool and a convenient visualization for humans, but with the proliferation of GPS and computerized mapping (everything in a big -180 to +180, -90 to +90 rectangle), I'm afraid it's destined to be a smaller niche than it could ha

Great question. In the common case, the solution is to set low TTLs (time to live attributes: they tell the DNS server how long to cache the name) on the DNS records, so they expire quickly. You can also run a pair of "front end" servers at

Yeah the snotty attitude advanced in the article is pretty offensive. If you run something on the internet and rely on it for your dinner, you don't really have an excuse for single points of failure. Do your job. It's exceptionally easy to

Within reason I agree, but in large part "technology fads" are actually evolution. The mood ring was a fad. Nobody knew what it was, then it happened, then it went away again and everyone was fine. With technology that's largely not the cas

The ISx50 is actually not anything like the Corolla -- it's rear wheel drive (or rear biased AWD) and has a different chassis. Interestingly, there is a luxury version of the Civic in Canada, it's called the Acura 1.6EL. Other than the fact

It's not a specific hack, but it has given me the same feeling, something I keep discovering: It's just a bunch of rules. Learn the rules and you understand it. We've probably all seen it with computing; it looks mysterious from the outside

I'm a screen junkie. The 14" diagonal widescreen perplexes me. They have terrible color and resolution and are just generally miserable. IPS panels ("FlexView" in IBM/Lenovo-speak) make a tremendous difference. Compare these two pictures:

Yeah, their example goes exactly the wrong way for me. I use Terminal 6 (or XTerm "Tiny") on a 1600x1200 15" LCD, and I don't use Antialiasing because at this font size every pixel counts, I don't need 6 blurry pixels, I need 9 sharp ones.
