On Ubuntu, sometimes I like to do Ctrl-Alt-F3 to get into a tty, login, and then do `sudo init 3` to shutdown everything pertaining to the graphical shell. The interaction with the computer is much faster there. After I get bored, I do eith

Offtopic, but I found nowhere to actually ask this question. Does anybody know if ESR is still alive? His blog [1] has not been updated in months--and looking at his post dates, this seems really out of character--, he hasn't posted an

I think this attempt by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales (but unrelated to Wikipedia itself) comes close [1]. Honestly, if it manages to approximately implement the community approach that works under Wikimedia itself, it may well become the m

This looks interesting and I want to use it. It seems to not be available on melpa, and the installation instructions for linux are missing, though. Are there any instructions for installation on linux that I miss? Apart from the cloning an

If you want to see some other opinion about your exact analogy, Richard Stallman--one of the most influential thinkers of the free software world--gave an answer to the same question, at large [1]. As a summary: - Output from a proprietary

I am not an expert in Ansible, or any other software of the kind, but I think this is one of the easier use-cases of such a program. I wrote an ansible script to compile emacs from source, after some initial configuration, and it serves me

As far as I recall, Ghidra was in Wikileaks' 7 NSA tools from 2013. If Wikileaks got the state of the art then, it means that the NSA had around 5 years until Ghidra was released to get something better.

By the way the archive works, isn't the link just adding the https://web.archive.org/web/*/ before the actual link? I guess linking to both is especially important for people not knowing about the existence o

Would you want to list those organization tools--if they are publicly available? I find that a lot of important nitty-gritty knowledge is dismissed as besides the point, something akin to why MIT designed the "Missing Semester" co

Maybe it is my preconception, but I always saw these apps as a hack, and thought the scanner produces more high-resolution documents. Scanning receipts and other "volume" documents may mean I have to scale them down to save space

The other side of the problem, that people may find interesting, is finding linux compatible scanners. For this, the sane project has a list of compatible scanners [1]. I was trying to buy a portable printer, because the one I had could not

You can also use basename with the find command $ find ./tmp -maxdepth 1 -type f -exec basename {} \; b a c I don't know the downsides of using basename though.

In the emacs world, there are textual interfaces like magit's [0] or dired's [1] interface, that tick many, perhaps most, boxes that you mention. Magit is basically that interface, but tailored to `git`, that also constructs the a

Do python linters catch that? It is not a code error and sometimes not a design error either, but a warning would be useful, and linters may have the tools necessary for that.
