For example when you enter something in the search box but forget to switch language on your keyboard it will detect it and provide right results with 'did you mean..'. Google has this feature, too. But they were late. Everybody already u

Their main homepage is also very useful for any Russian: local weather, TV program, ruble exchange rates etc. "Ask Yandex" ad campaign was very successful: it made "to ask Yandex" in Russian mean the same as "to google" in English.

Not all ideas are easy to come by. For example, the idea of the Cathedral and the Bazaar and discovery of Linus's law is far from easy to come by. Only great thinkers are capable of generating such ideas.

I see your point. But, please, let's encourage people to write more articles about what they think is right. Even if the article is wrong it's still good that it was written.

It works both ways. Don't you like Ruby? You don't like Ruby. Don't read articles about Ruby! I for one may use Ruby as a scripting language for my next project, I want to see more articles like this.

How true. As an example, learning and understanding Python/C API was much more practical and enlightening experience for me than experience of learning a new language like Haskell or O'Caml.

I'm from Russia too. In my experience this "till death us do part" attitude changes to "get a lot of money or get out" pretty fast. Right after marriage. Women are women everywhere.

I don't care, I make the claim I make: Big guys have free advertising from piracy, small guys are hurt from the same thing. Edit: I guess we mis-understand each other -- I didn't mean VERY small guys, who may suffer from obscurity.

It's very simple: for bigger company piracy is more like a form of advertising, but for a small one it can actually hurt and kill the small guys.

Steve's story has reminded me of the other HN discussion: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=399967 This "other side" is exactly what makes low-level languages so powerful.

I think postmodern programming is a combination of both Alan Kay's versions. An example from my own experience: take Django code base, replace Django templates with Mako, replace Django ORM with an existing object database, add some nice fe

In Python you can always do: import sys sys.stdout.write("Hello world!\n") if you really need this level of detail as a teacher.

At least Windows GUI is written in Delphi, that is Object Pascal. Edit: also, there are many new Delphi/Pascal projects, just check out http://www.lazarus.freepascal.org/ the "True Death" is highly exaggerated.

We like to believe in creation, but what's actually happening is evolution, not creation. Original ideas are like genetic mutations of old ideas and are not strong enough to survive and win. I think that the strongest ideas are never really

There are reasons why mysql_replicated backend was created and used successfully in production instead of MySQL Proxy. For example, MySQL Proxy knows nothing about transactions.

I don't think that lack of marketing skills is a real problem. You could have a friend that would do it for you. Think Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs. It's ok to be bad in marketing and good in hacking as long as you are not alone.
