Stuart Halloway (part of clojure/core and author of Programming Clojure) has a great response at the bottom of the comments: Clojure’s STM API does not include agents, atoms, and refs. Only refs are part of the STM API… …consider your ar

It's funny, as HN is often anti-degree, that this kind of comment is posted here. I don't think someone needs the degree to be called an engineer, especially people who have this much experience in the industry. Looking at the past experien

It is a good thing. And it's as simple as e.g. (dosync (ref-set ref newval)). In fact, if you find yourself doing it a lot (don't, please!) then define yourself a little function (defn rset [r v] (dosync (ref-set r v))). Must isn't that

It'd be one black pixel. In Lisp, it'd be an empty cons cell. In C, it'd be the null pointer. In Java, it'd be a XxxFactoryFactoryFactory.

Pretty sure most banks don't do too much physical money storing. I've used cash once in the past couple months; someone gave me a 20 to pay me back for something. I got rid of it ASAP. But yeah, they're using other banks for their existin

The newest submission (before this one) was from over a year ago. I think you're okay–HN lets links be resubmitted after n days, I do believe. I think it's fine to have resubmissions from time to time, though I can't say I personally li

It's funny you say that, because I just used this technique to make a few lines of my Clojure (a Lisp) code a little neater. I find it more readable, and prettier.

Sometimes I feel as though my little, simple, apps' source will end up being a terabyte after packaging all their dependancies. It's a little ridiculous. Regardless, this seems like it has some pretty powerful implications for big-data proc

Not at all! When walking around a city, our brains filter out less relevant input, stopping it from entering our own massive lookup table with heuristics. For example; I hear a gunshot and see a flower. I'm not going to notice the flower. I

I misread the title as "Apple to hold how to hold the iPhone 4 press conference...". Telling. In all honesty, this has been blown out of proportion; though hell if it's a great problem to have.
