Interesting article, but those cumulative maps are... not so useful. They're straight up from https://www.reddit.com/r/xkcd/comments/13nm1o/heatmap/

Agreed. As a Spaniard, I'm surely biased, but I prefer pork to beef any day of the week.

In bike-friendly places like Amsterdam and Copenhagen, it's super rare to see a helmet. A bike helmet offers reasonable protection in a solo fall, but it has nearly cosmetic effect if you're hit by a car. But one thing you don

I found the headline confusing. It would have been helpful to include the type of cancer in it. Or if it's a pan-cancer treatment, to say so explicitly.

All they have to do is leave things as they are. They won't have trouble NOT following through in their promises. Politicians do that all the time. The US economy is the strongest of its peers, and the best it's been in a long tim

I wish the term 'displacement' would be more commonly used, because it encapsulates the negative aspects of gentrification. On the other hand, gentrification has objectively positive aspects (improvements in safety, amenities, liv

I left a pair of sandals in the shower room at work (a shared space) way before the pandemic. We stopped having a desk there, and I stopped coming in other than for a few social events. Then the office closed, and reopened. I came back for

When I wrote my PhD thesis (the closest thing to a book I've ever worked on), I used LyX and I loved it. All the power of LaTeX, with a usable UI. When you're done, just apply the publisher settings and you're out!

That was my favorite feature. And the random match part, way earlier than ChatRoulette. I remember talking to some kid in the Philippines about the history of her country and mine (Spain). Mind-blowing at the time.

At least in Spain, there's a lot of local control by city hall on zoning. A lot of people assume that any large development that comes up only did so because of backroom deals, so they oppose it blindly. And that translates to who they

I live in the US but my family is in/from Spain. When my mom was visiting, we had to attend a funeral (for my wife's grandpa), and after the ceremony everyone went to a local restaurant and had a small feast. My mom was appalled,

My god, I saw this comment and thought it'd be fun to pick up something by Neal Stephenson. After all, I loved Cryptonomicon back in college. But it's 880 pages! As a slow reader, this is sadly not something I'll ever get to.

When I was a TA in grad school, I noticed the same. Early on I thought some BS answers were at least kind of funny, and I gave them the benefit of the doubt, maybe giving more attention to the parts that were correct. After I saw similar an

That's right. I remember a local "electrification festival" where some vendors and city officials teamed up to explain the various options. One of the most common questions was "will this lower by bill"? And the mos

It's also a very powerful "office OS" type of platform. Nobody else comes near in that dimension AFAIK. Agreed that it's not a designer's wet dream, but it does the job, albeit in a clunky way.

I have a similar mental model, but Teams the way we use it is more of a replacement of Slack than Zoom. It's a huge app in terms of features, and it covers both segments, so it's not really a clean divide there.

The Madrid airport offered this service, but it wasn't very popular, nor widely known. You checked in your luggage downtown and hopped on the subway to get to the airport with just your carry-on. I can't find any reference now, so

If it was anything like the Spanish Civil War, lots of people just happened to live in an area that was controlled by one or another side. Those who were committed to their cause probably did their best to escape or take arms. Most were sim

San Francisco, the densest city in the state, is 3/4 suburbia. There's no reason why it couldn't host 4 times the population without resorting to Hong Kong style urbanism (which would be great IMO, but that's a separate

This sounds like a great teacher. The fact that you got this gem to think about years (decades?) later tells so much about his craft.
