Empirically, complexity(einstein's field equations) > complexity(newton's law), complexity(spherical harmonics) > complexity(electrons spinning around atom) and so on and so on. Complexity is not a criterion for truth

That is true, the universe's Kolmogorov complexity is reducing every moment. The complexity of our theories, though,is a whole different thing. The laws of thermodynamics don't apply to them: they dont become simpler just by time passing. W

Have to disagree, there is nothing inherently "simple" or "complex" about the world. As humans, with limited reasoning capacity, we tend towards simple representations because they are easy to reason about. So we have to choose our theories

It's baffling to me why Apple does this. Magazines and newspapers are troubled enough as it is, and the ipad could help those who prefer to read only once a month. How much does Apple make by this 30% rule? Do they need that money? Is it wo

On what basis ... the simplest hypothesis is the most likely one to be true?" Occam didn't say that. The true hypothesis is the one confirmed by experiments. One would use Occam's razor to choose among equally valid explanations. Now, wh

This is a measurement, not an intervention experiment. A control experiment in this case should be performed on another universe with no GR. Of course, i guess they did test it on neutral regions as well. Since are no other known forces act

Science says that blind crowdsourcing is generally better: http://www.wired.co.uk/news/archive/2011-05/17/wisdom-of-cro... One could find arguments for both sides, though: - HN is not a crowd, it's a niche community - Voting is not blind

If it's a simulation, that's also the only representation of the world i can have and can act upon. So i choose to ignore that possibility as inconsequential to existence and take the empirical stance of accepting the world because my sense

It's sad to see a discussion that could be of interest to computer hackers (the current neurosimulation software is decades old, horrible and could really benefit from some new ideas) ending up to the usual blah blah about self aware robots

I 'm an eliminativist myself, so i see no duality. It's time to demystify "consciousness". It's a word used to cover a whole range of phenomena that arise in our brain.

It will still be a machine, won't be able to kill you unless you give it a gun. Our ethical rules generally show some respect to animals, because we can empathize with cruelty against them, but even that is relative (we 're not so sorry whe

It's still extremely difficult to observe network activity in vivo. Even the most sophisticated methods can only observe tiny fractions and only a single property of neurons at a time. A large scale in silico network makes it trivial to ti

This is not about making a machine that thinks, rather making a useful large scale model of neurons so we can test how they respond on a very large network scale. Robots will not rise out of it. Think of it like an expensive telescope; do w

Indeed. There is a huge distance to go before we can simulate things like actual thinking brains. The blue brain proejct and the proposed project use compartmental models, that essentially break down neurons to equivalent electrical circuit

Why would Apple ever get in the way? Just so they don't lose the 0.002% of their revenues? Wont that also be a PR disaster for them? (Apple the elephant going after the tiny patent holder). Face it guys, whether it's Apple taking your 30% o
