You probably don't even need to check. If it's a compiler, chances are it won't be IO bound.

The assumption the writers of the Django docs might be making is that you're coming from a web dev background already (e.g. recovering PHP4 or ASP user), and you're ready to dive into what makes Django different.

I love TextMate for PHP projects because of command-t and snippets, but the syntax highlighting and indentation is a bit off sometimes.
