Ones which solve real pain points. But it's the wrong question to ask, YC heavily focuses on team over idea, the idea is a validation of the team as much anything else (i.e is the team smart and capable of thinking deeply about a space).

Fork and rename, but don't call it pdfminer2 as that's trampling over the namespace of the original. Rename it to something new.

Presumably there were some risk factors in your case that meant that they rejected you, it would be much more helpful to everyone if you specified what they were (i.e. you were in a high-risk industry like gambling, ticketing, etc.) that wa

I wrote an article on Dragon's Den valuation and why they're different from typical startup valuations a few years back: http://blog.awesomezombie.com/2010/10/low-valuations-on-drag... Fundamentally the type of businesses that go on these

Once you start getting to large scale purchases you'll tend to need to do a lot more hand-holding to close the sale in any case. It's not about pulling out a credit card and just paying for the service, but about multiple people in the cust

Yes the counted metrics are much more reliable. It's much harder for TC to misenter an acquisition/funding round then it is for them accidentally add an extra zero to a number.

Which part would you like data on ? - the unbanked payments issue is pretty well known in the payments/retail industry. See this press piece by Walmart: http://news.walmart.com/news-archive/2012/04/26/walmart-anno... There's also several

If you're unbanked you don't have a bank account, hence no debit/credit card. Between 18-24% of the US population fall into that category.

Poor people are disproportionately likely to shop in-store rather than online because they're vastly more likely to be unbanked (i.e. no credit card) and be low-education. I'd hazard an educated guess that the percentage of income spent by

Yes. It's happened on more than one occasion. (For example LightTable have mentioned it publicly here; and I'm personally aware of other companies who've had it happen but I don't know if its public in those cases)

Read the Venture Hacks book (it's $9 from http://venturehacks.com/ or you can get it from amazon, etc.) as it gives you a lot of the basic advice on pitching VCs.

SSL is much more expensive to deliver at scale, it could potentially kill popular non-commercial websites as the costs of hosting would be much more expensive without the caching, etc. that non-SSL permits.

TBH that sounds like a bad idea for any number of reasons. Presumably you have some kind of credit history, why not just get a loan for a couple of grand to cover you for a few months until you get funding (or borrow it off a friend) ?

I imagine saying a financial institution has lost all of it's customers money (without evidence) would be considered libellous in most countries.

Unless you have strong evidence to support that statement I'd suggest deleting it as it's potentially libellous.
