An important distinction is peer vs. critic. In many cases, the uproar in popular media is created by uninformed sensationalism. Journalists with deadlines and without backgrounds in niche fields just can't formulate meaningful criticism.

Citation definitely needed on that claim. Alcohol kills, and so does alcohol withdrawal... The only drug that kills more people per year is tobacco/nicotine, which is also legal.

I think the title is a reference to Alexander Shulgin, the author of Phenethylamines I have Known and Loved (PiHKAL), among other books. On this basis, there's an errant "that" in the title, if that was the purpose.
