Here is one comparison for 2048: http://codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/24134/create-a-s... I think the idea of comparing languages based on a variety of tasks is interesting. We've all seen "hello

I've been working on this project in my spare time over the past few months. SIGCHI is coming to Toronto this weekend, so I was inspired to post on HN and hopefully receive some feedback.

I lived in Berkeley for 5 years, and I can totally imagine this happening. While some parts of the condemnation are crazy (2 story palace!?) I nevertheless see the kernel of truth that lies somewhere in the murky rationale of that rant. Now

I would echo this sentiment. Not only are the columns intentionally mis-labeled but they also appear to be computed, meaning some of the variance inherent to the original sample will have been lost.

How realistic is this in practice? On this side of the "great wall," it is relatively simple to create and use a VPN. Isn't it likely that VPNs are prohibited, or at least given special attention, within China?

That's the thought process for purchasing a phone. Think about purchasing a general purpose computer. Think about replacing your game console. Motorola may have been a phone company, but this thing isn't a phone by any stretch o

To everyone complaining about the password-protected login, there is something you need to understand: this is about copyright, not the library being fake-open. This repository apparently consists of copyrighted works, and by the Fair Use

That's annoying... but it's a really good article! Send it to Pocket, perhaps? As a relatively new Strava user, I thought the article was worth it.

This script would appear to be at odds with the language of that clause, but I wonder if it is truly against the spirit of Coursera. I can see clear ways to automatically exploit the website for the purpose of scraping their content. Howev

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odds_ratio for one answer. Another "single number" answer is generated by the class of tests that determine the statistical significance of an observation; see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_level

I love xkcd, and this one is the spookiest of them all. The logic of that comic leads to a challenging existential proposition.

I actually exclaimed "UNREAL!" when I launched this in Firefox Aurora. I was expecting Engine 1, but I see now it's Unreal Engine 3. WOW. If that's not proof that asm.js is a cool concept, then I don't know what is. I don't understand how

As DanBC pointed out, "moot" means the opposite of "open to debate." Honestly, I think Moot is kindof silly for sending the letter in the first place, but he's totally right that your name (moot.it) will cause confusion. Add me to the list

Once you get to PhD level, you need to be an independent student. The best students are. In order to get there, it's useful to be independent all along the way, typically by riffing on the constraints of the various assignments you comple
