My favorite "this should be free" has to do with when Qt was released under the GPL. It always bothered me when people selling software would complain that they couldn't use the GPL version of Qt. At some level understood t

So if you make a mistake at Amazon your job is on the line? Wouldn't that incentive developers to be extremely risk adverse and play politics? Is it a "mistake" to get assigned to a project that is doomed? And what about

Agreed, I would be more inclined to watch videos if they were highly edited. If you want to watch a MOOC on linear algebra the videos you will find are little more than a camcorder stuck in the corner of a classroom and dumped online. For

If it makes you feel any better out there is a really good issue tracking system that has a bolted on git repository system that actively is rejecting improvements for their repo stuff. If GitHub didn't have issues people would still b

Another way to put it would be I will happily only take 95% if the other option is we don't do anything and people can even commit stuff that doesn't even build let alone pass tests.

I have used that (only running a few tests that match the diff) in the past to great success as the first level of testing that would occur on the users computer before committing code. It reduced the amount of build failures by 99% and te

I am guessing the scheduling has become significantly more complex as the company has grown. The conveyor system in the Memphis facility alone looks to be an interesting problem. Is there stuff you want to have, but just don't have t

Well if it truly mattered out there right now there is a company that has a void that they need filling and all they have to do is speak up and help fund a replacement.

I see a lovely list of all sorts of features, but then I get to limitations: "Built-in access controls are not branch-based, they are repository-based." That falls under one of the three things that the Git solution must have or e

Depends on how you look at it. Stash is dirt cheap compared to GitHub enterprise so if you think Stash is expensive you are not either of their target audience.

I wrote up an essay of the three key things that every Git server should have, features that if are missing cause users to decided to look around for alternatives. And you are right, "Written in X" is not on that list. http:

You are using perforce so just write a bash script called p4 that if you are doing a commit first does checks followed by the real commit and otherwise passed every command to the real p4.

Why not have local pre-commit hooks? Even if you are not using git-p4 clobbering some sort of frontend tool to p4 submit that first runs make etc that everyone would use would be a big win for your team. http://benjamin-meyer.bl

While both of those are nice, even doing something as dumb as having a git pre-commit hook that runs 'make' (or whatever is the equivalent) catches an amazing amount of errors.

The only way I have been able to get away from Ben's law is to have an automatic system that does builds before code can get in. This can be server side, user side, pre-commit hooks, pull-request bots or anything that catches build br

The reason why I keep watching what Pebble does is because for Apple and Google the watch could be just an accessory to their main event like ChromeCast and AppleTv. But for Pebble their watch and its capability is their bread and butter.

What is annoying is when build artifacts are checked into source control systems along side of the source. There is very little way to exclude them or only check out the binaries, you can only have both. This happens all too often and I d
