So some aren't confused. Content delivery is on FreeBSD, not Linux.

You're thinking of the ratings board. The Academy consists of hundreds. Politics in Hollywood is a cause that will win you awards just like gays, race, AIDS/HIV, Africa and a multitude of other subjects.

I'm not surprised. I'm no big time Hollywood guy but have 45 years of experience. Such ceremonies will award trophies based on subject matter without regard to quality. Not to sound like I'm disparaging the doc but anything a

While I agree pages shouldn't fail without javascript, there are plenty of ecommerce sites out there now that fail without it for the very reason I stated: those with javascript turned off are less than 2% of all visitors.

Because the marketing guys want it and to write for fallbacks takes time. While this instance is not about marketing, my point is that turning javascript off makes you one of the few and I would have to determine if that 2% is worth the eff

The modern web is scriptable and the days of "no javascript" are over. If you turn off javascript, you are one of less than 2% of the web that does so but you know what you did and the consequences so you also know how to fix the

Powershell is a Unix workalike. That's why you like it so much.

Quick ad-hoc hacks? Obviously you don't understand the Unix philosophy of do one thing and do it well. If you were ever to learn how to write scripts, you'd find this to be a god-send and you wouldn't have it any other way.

Nope. My personal 'predilections' have nothing to do with it. I thought HN had a theme other than McDonald's restaurant closings and that would make it off topic. Obiously not and anything goes here without moderation. So I&#

It's hard enough to make money in the restaurant business much less to also take on a mortgage. And then you have no guarantee your restaurant will still be around in three years and then what what do you do? Source: me. Multiple resta

Two questions: 1) Why is this on HN? 2) How in the world did it make it the the #2 spot (at the moment)? EDIT: Knew I would get downvoted. I now have as little respect for HN as I do for Reddit. You wouldn't believe how little respect

fwiw, I homeschooled my two boys. One graduated summa cum laude from a well known university. The other graduated in the top 10% of another well known school. And I think I did a lousy job of it. If enough people show an interest, I'll

This guy claims to be a software engineer but then asks this question, "Why spend your spare time learning math, which is challenging and sometimes dry?" The question invalidates anything he has to say on the subject and makes me

You make no sense at all. My complaint is about the numerous postings of "general news" here on HN. If I wanted general news, I would not come here to find it and, instead, would go to my favorite actual news sites. HN is not a ge

This isn't the first time where I've read that someone doesn't understand why prices end in .99 and I'm surprised no one seems to know though someone in the comments in the article came close. I've owned restaurants

This is a problem. Need a solution? Slap a micro on it. It's a shortcut but not always the best solution. I've seen circuits using a cheap micro, yes, but someone had to program it and a simple analog circuit would have done nicel

The first they should do is do what Facebook is doing and turn to FreeBSD for ideas in their attempt to make Linux as good as FreeBSD's: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/08/07/facebook_wants_linux...
