I'm surprised nobody has mentioned economies of scale so far. Enterprise applications are highly customized systems with deployments of 1 in many cases. We talk about the outrageous cost, but consider an 500,000 dollar application. That's a

I believe the point was he did this in his spare time for fun, with no expectations of anyone using it. There is no novel work in this, which would be consistent with a hobby project rather than doing brain-draining work in one's spare time

d2l is awful in its own right - the University of Arizona uses it and I'm absolutely boggled as to how this software was ever sold. It's not terrible from the student's perspective, but the professor/TA interface is abysmal. It reminds me o

Perhaps. I don't blame the bankers in general. However, these banks received government money because they had liquidity problems, then promptly handed out that same government money to its employees in the form of bonuses in numbers that s

The original example had a top and bottom spanning all three columns, making the problem fundamentally different than you describe. I would be more interested if you could take that original example in the original post and show how CSS doe

Education certainly can make a difference. However, let's consider the problems that you have in lower income school districts. * Increased child abuse * Poorer nutrition. * Lower chance of a safety net. My parents helped me out with colleg

So, no great teacher would choose to work in poor school districts. We already have to give incentives to experienced teachers to work there. Good teachers would concentrate in wealthy districts, because the best teachers would have an ampl

If you haven't noticed, there were 70,000 layoffs this week. In Tucson, people are scrambling for jobs. I'm in a position where my employment is ending in March and the jobs I see are extremely competitive. I'm in a good position relatively

The author qualified this list as designs he has used for himself in enterprise software. I don't believe that he was suggesting that these were a list Set In Stone.

The fundamental problem with many of these blogs is there's only so much information one person has stored up in their life. After that, there's only so much we can say. This is likely why Steve Yegge still has interesting things to say - h

There are many people who take the GRE for math and science who have English as a second language. This is less true for the humanities and social sciences (besides Anthropology, a major exception.)

This is what I don't get. Why should I have to retrain my fingers to justify Microsoft's UI designers' salaries? I don't mind for myself, but I dread having to teach my parents every time, especially when I don't use the operating system

Judging by the number of adultery stories I've heard here and there, I'd imagine it's a few more than we'd expect. Females seem to use it for hooking up, not for any sort of relationship, and it seems to be used especially if one is already
