I used a similar setup a long while ago and wanted a way to connect to databases easily. So I wrote some code to parse the MySQL and Postres config files to extract database info in Emacs: https://stackoverflow.com/a/46

I love that application. I plan to make some improvements to the web UI. I’d love to have multiple tabs with saved reports. That would allow my spouse to use it quite easily. I’ll be adding that at some point.

My guess as to why most apps are now a web UI on top of a DB is because it’s easy to “install”. SelfHostBlocks is admittedly geared towards a central server serving web apps. Or at least apps with a desktop or mobile component but geared to

This is the business model I want to have: I work on a stack of fully open source software and package them in a turn-key server that you own. You can use it on your own for free if you’re knowledgeable and I offer a subscription where I’m

That’s a very good point. For a long time I was advocating for self-hosting for increasing one’s privacy, but I always was hitting the “I’ve got nothing to hide” wall. Now, the concern is losing access to your data. What do you do if you’re

That’s essentially what I’m trying to make widely available through my projects https://github.com/ibizaman/selfhostblocks and https://github.com/ibizaman/skarabox . Their shared goal is to make se

Ah you’re right. I should’ve been more clear. I’m deploying on my server and it self hosts 10 or so services. Like Nextcloud and Vaultwarden. The playwright tests are to test those. It’s pretty basic like just checking I can create a user a

On NixOS we get one new grub menu entry per “deployment”, be it when you deploy to another host or the local one. They both then get a new grub entry. Of course you can still shoot yourself in the foot by making your system inaccessible rem

That’s really cool. I learned to love (stateful) property testing through a project at work to migrate drivers for MongoDB. https://blog.tiserbox.com/posts/2024-02-27-stateful-property...

That’s so true. I can see it too. The technology to make that must be super fun to work on but please I hope this will never happen. Can you imagine turning the whole sky as a giant pixelated screen to constantly show us ads? That’s as dyst

Do not underestimate the joy of using something beautiful and something one crafted. Those little bit of joy add up in the end. At least, they matter to me. I “smartened” an energy meter with an ESP32 and a photoresistor that measures every

There are still lots of people playing DnD so not all hope is lost. Or just do 6 kids and play with them, true it’s a long term investment just for one game :D Seriously though the instructions say you can play over internet too.

Self-hosting is such a nice touch. For me it’s a requirement indeed. Thanks for making this possible! On a different topic, may I ask how did you find your first users? This always fascinates me and TBH it’s not an uninterested question as

With rsync, you’re replicating only the last state. With borg, you can see all backups being made and rollback to any previous snapshot. This is true of a lot of backup solutions btw. Concretely, if you inadvertently delete a file and this
