I do know that. But again, a military intelligence unit focused on spying is not equivalent to a university.

I appreciate you pointing out the inaccuracies. Was actually hoping for that. > But how is that fundamentally different than MIT, Stanford et al training a pipeline of people that go to big tech firms that also arguably violate privacy?

Is there anything factually wrong with the article? I read it / fact checked and it wasn’t obviously inaccurate.

I believe it boils down to what we teach as “finished”. Is a feature finished when the code works? When the pull request is merged? Or when a feature works well ? I also believe there’s a lack of care. The difference between a craftsman an

Thanks for the response. While people might nitpick on how things were handled, the fact that you checked if anyone was affected and fixed it promptly is a good thing.

Would gladly pay $200 for that. I tried garmin, apple watch, whoop, and a couple other heart rate trackers recently… they’re very very uncomfortable when coming from a Casio!

It very clearly does concern us… hence the thread. FWIW I’m only familiar with the term “pragmatic programmer” because of the book. I don’t think I’ve ever heard it in any other context. When I saw the post I thought it was written by the s

Simple solution: figure out which episode they were on and play the next episode even louder. Also it's a fantastic show.

I tried to find out why. Unfortunately the change that introduces it predates the official release by a few months. And predates the mailing list by about a year: https://trac.nginx.org/nginx/changeset/5238e93961a1

If you don’t need to scale and you want something simple you might try rolling your own blue/green deployment using nginx or haproxy. The basic idea is that traffic gets served by nginx or haproxy and forwarded to your app server. When

Loving this trend of banning phones. I overheard a conversation last week from a group of teachers talking about the phone ban: They had students put their phone in signal blocking bags. But some phones kept searching for signal until they

The engine part is looking for users that are somewhat, but not totally satisfied and building for them. That is - you don’t want to build for people that already love your product (it’s already great for them!) and you don’t want to build

I think “this behavior is by design” is often an excuse. Building quality software is hard because it’s the mistakes and oversights that get noticed. It’s much easier for someone to claim it’s “by design” than to try and fix it.

Two lines of reasoning. First: A lot of time was spent building consensus. No individual felt they had unilateral power to remove the calculator. Instead the behavior was to seek approval. That's probably because of unclear ownership,

It’s more nuanced than that. A lot of VCs aren’t incentivized to see their portfolio company ipo. They are incentivized to see their portfolio company get a higher valuation and raise more. So it would seem that attractiveness leading to a
