It worked fine in the past when the mainstream platforms were also free speech platforms. Scale matters and those websites are only terrible because they're bastions for everybody else who also got banned.

Of course, why wouldn't they use the latest stuff? Farming technology is literally the reason you and your (relatively) recent ancestors aren't slaving away in the fields. Doesn't matter if that's combine harvesters or l

To be fair, I'll bet there's quite a lot of people who'd stay there as one of those AirBnB experiences.

I mean, if you were CEO, would you choose to reduce profit when you have investors on your back or want to grow staff quickly? Outside of VC driven cash cows or big tech, there's not that much money to go around at the bottom.

Is there a credible reason why SARS and COVID both came from the same country? The right official response would've been to not start a cover up (and the rest of the world could've hopefully prepared better). Even the WHO was carr

People generally aren't antsy about targeted ads but data collection and tracking. This avoids that.

That's a circular argument and easy to say with hindsight. Apple is where it is precisely because it invested in making it happen.

Netflix are accused every day of the exact opposite, i.e. "pushing social justice narratives". They're a media company caught up in some nonsense internet culture war, don't read too much into it.

Stallman and FSF predicted this decades ago, but they failed to foresee not many people really care about being able to control their computers as much as big expensive hardware purchases like vehicles. DRM and general lack of free-software

Marketing is not why the iPhone took off, there is substance there even if you don't agree. A full UNIX kernel, capacitive touchscreen, low latency / high perf OS, 3rd party apps and a bunch of UX innovations. Yes everything exist

From watching his testimony I believe Cummings was disappointed that this 'data system' wasn't available before the pandemic, precisely because that few week delay putting one together meant everything.

"Maximum weekly working hours - GOV.UK" https://www.gov.uk/maximum-weekly-working-hours As far as I'm aware this came from the EU Working Time Directive so it's been law for a long time.

Unpopular opinion: Facebook is widely disliked by the loudest voices in the room (for good reason), but the vast majority of people still just treat it like a fancy forum. It's not going to stain your CV. Plus, Facebook-the-app is far

I imagine a multimodal platform like Facebook (with people using photos and text together in some way) would find a single model valuable.

While I agree this isn't over, I disagree with your conclusion. We have little idea how early COVID exposure will affect us decades from now, but there's already signs of psychological strain in kids which could prove to be worse.

Yeah, I suspect this is where a lot of the 'debate' is coming from. My experience is that Google/FB/etc... have (a slight) majority preferring WFO for at least 3 days, and other companies are overwhelmingly WFH.

Microsoft definitely needs software engineers. Privacy and security of users is on the line, even if they literally aren't going to die, lives can easily be ruined by a data leak from the wrong company.
