But for guys like me who never use mass assignment, our applications are not vulnerable by default, correct? And likewise, for people who RTFM before using mass assignment, their applications are not vulnerable, correct? If I understand th

OK I haven't been able to find that $4K/year thing. It may have come from here: http://www.edmunds.com/mercedes-benz/m-class/1999/consumer-r... where the guy talks about spending $5K in one particular year, which appears to be the first y

Maybe this is just a power-user thing, though? I don't even think it's a power user thing. I think it's just a you thing. I'm a power user and although I did slow down using my iPad when I got my 11" Air, I didn't stop at all. It's still

I completely agree. It's pretty obviously counterpoint to the usual image of the programmer as nerd. I could see taking it seriously if the OP had said "I met some of these guys and they're as douchey as the article makes them seem" but thi

a job ad that implies that nerdy programmers may not be welcome really restricts the size of the candidate pool. that's what I find funny about the whole thing. "we're hiring programmers! no nerds." that's an unlikely strategy for success

I've been thinking about this quite a bit recently because I'm about to buy a car. Mini Coopers are another make with a ton of built-in computers. However, every time I do a search on reliability I find people talking casually about giganti

Really, the issue is that the news feed is broken. Absolutely. I coded up a replacement using the GitHub API: http://gilesbowkett.blogspot.com/2010/10/node-miniapp-minima... It broke when they changed the API, but by then I had found h

Fun facts! I first read Plato before I was 16, and first read Plato in the original Greek before I was 20. Those are the monkey see, monkey do years. However, although I think Raganwald is basically onto something, it's not entirely deliber

Upvoted! But here's the thing. How many technology choices does fashion dictate? I've seen fashion determine huge amounts of technology choices, and wheels get reinvented constantly in this industry as a result. In 2006ish I did a talk abou

Yeah, but you have to give the guy credit, his was the only comment that made me laugh. And it's basically true. Not in the sense that this is new to me, I did a bunch with node and jasmine-node (etc.) in 2010, maybe earlier, but I went to

I know and respect Reg. I've emailed and tweeted quite a lot with him over the years, long been a fan of his writing, and hung out in person in Toronto a few times. He's a great guy. But this rambling theory of his highlights a problem I've

Chill man. You have no information on the topic of whether or not I have "rational" reasons for making my judgement call; all you can say with certainty is that I haven't explained any to you. Give me a freaking break, dude. I posted like t

yeah, I agree. actually I don't know if I'd agree on the "vast majority" part, but the question of "is client-side MVC The Future?" can get kind of silly and messianic, while the question of "is client-side MVC A Future?" is undoubtedly yes

We also had a swanky in-house client-side MVC framework cooking with Cinco. We used it once for Basecamp Mobile and while it was a good experience and the end result was great, it did little to sway my thinking on client-side MVC being a s

In terms of client-side MVC vs server-side renderings, the ratio is more like 90/10 or 95/5. DHH, I think you misunderstood here; I believe Jeremy's referring to the blog post where you said Basecamp Next had almost as many lines of Coffe

the TechCrunch link posted today shows very strong evidence of collusion and criminal conspiracy, but I'd agree that this Harpers thing builds up a whole tower of empty, meaningless nada on top of that very solid foundation.
