I had thought that ALPR data would be quite a very tool for detectives, but a related article [1] is quite disparaging about their use in Vermont. Apparently in 2013, for a ~$1m investment, 106 queries were made resulting in just 3 cases of

Immutable props seems to be one immediate difference between React and Riot. I hope this could be considered for a future update; immutability by default makes debugging so much nicer! (Also React's PropType checking is surprisingly u

Are there opportunities for hackers to volunteer in projects like mobile payments? I feel like donating a bit of development time to the right project has the potential to have a bigger impact than just donating money.

I would be interested to understand more about why WhatsApp made some of those decisions. The requirement to keep your phone connected to the Internet seems strange, perhaps it's using some encryption key that never leaves the device?

I'd also highly recommend earplugs to guarantee you're not disturbed by noise. (Vibrating phone works as an alarm). They're probably unnecessary for most nights sleep, but they eliminate that odd night here and there where yo

Even if previous well known attacks didn't rely on encryption, it seems likely that future attacks will be organised over encrypted channels because they are now more ubiquitous. "Encrypted Web Traffic More Than Doubles After NSA

Atlassian Stash [1] allows one level of hierarchy: the top level is a list of projects, each containing multiple repositories. It's more of an enterprise solution though, so BitBucket is probably more comparable. 1: https://

Ah that's good to know, looks like I should switch it back! The manual u8 stuff was pretty marginal. (It was also before I discovered the `PartialEq` and `Copy` traits, so please forgive my Rust inexperience!)

Sure: https://github.com/iamdanfox/QwirkleSolver The Rust version has had some algorithm improvements to reach 0.015s, but it was conceptually identical when it was solving in 0.7s.

I have currently got some bit-swizzling [1] going on to fit the concept of a Piece into u8. (one of 6 colours and one of 6 shapes). I'd like to turn this back into a nice enum if I can! Introducing laziness by writing an iterator was

Coincidentally, I used Rust for a little board game solver this week and have been delighted by its performance and typechecker feedback! My Scala v1 was was very concise but took ~3 seconds to simulate a whole game. The naive Rust rewrite

Apparently the Rust compiler produces a slightly different branch-free FizzBuzz[1] involving this delightful snippet: static OUT: &'static [u8] = b"\ 1\n2\nFizz\n4\nBuzz\nFizz\n7\n8\nFizz\nBuzz\n11\nFizz\n13\n14\nFiz

The idea of declaring a variable to represent a bunch of different values seems refreshingly different to so many popular languages today. I'd love to see a few real world applications written in idiomatic Cosmos!

This looks pretty cool as a super easy to configure CI! I'm sure big projects will stick to Travis, but if you haven't got your linter set up yet this looks ideal. I wonder how hard it would be for the bot to autofix stuff too? Pe

A workaround that I've used before is to connect to my site via the domain name in one tab, and the IP address in another - cross domain protection ensures I get two nicely partitioned sessions.

I'll be interested to see what impact this has on the overall CS department at Oxford. CS in the UK is growing, but still has a much lower profile than in the States. In Stanford, CS is a well-known (!), popular major whereas here in
